College Football Betting Online: North Carolina State has consistently been a bowl team over the last decade, but that’s not why Dave Doeren was brought to Raleigh. Doeren was brought in to make the Wolfpack an eight or nine win team each season, but that has yet to be a consistent reality as NC State has failed to break the .500 mark in conference in any of the past three years.

2015 NC STATE WOLFPACK SEASON REVIEW
Jacoby Brissett had a pretty solid year for the Wolfpack last season. He completed 60 percent of his passes for 2662 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions on the season and also ran for 370 yards and six touchdowns. However, he wasn’t quite the same quarterback in conference play. Brissett only completed 53 percent of his passes in ACC play and barely threw for over 200 yards in those games.
The running game provided a lot of production last year with Matthew Dayes and Jaylen Samuels posting gaudy numbers. Dayes and Samuels combined to run for over 1200 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season and both backs averaged at least 6.5 yards per carry.
The biggest black mark on Doeren’s tenure at NC State is that he hasn’t been able to beat any good teams. The Wolfpack have only knocked off two teams that went to bowl games during his time in Raleigh and if not for easy non-conference schedules, his teams would have hovered right around .500.
WHAT CHANGED
Brissett left for the NFL and it will be difficult for NC State to replace his production. He wasn’t spectacular, but was polished and was very experienced after two full seasons as the starter. Ryan Finley came over as a graduate transfer from Boise State and he is the favorite to win the job. Finley has prototypical size for a quarterback, but struggled with turnovers and that’s what he’ll need to improve upon.
Finley will have a familiar face to guide him in new offensive coordinator Eli Drinkwitz. Drinkwitz was his OC at Boise State and has plenty of experience in engineering high powered attacks. He was brought in after Doeren was disappointed with Matt Canada’s playcalling last season and will look to air the ball out more.
2016 NC STATE WOLFPACK SEASON PREVIEW
The passing attack for NC State will likely take a step back in 2016. Even though Finley has experience with Drinkwitz’s offense, he wasn’t great in it and has only thrown 97 passes in his career. He won’t be the running threat that Brissett was either and that will put more of an onus on the running game.
The Wolfpack will lean more heavily on the running game than last season. Dayes and Samuels are back and Johnny Frasier is ready to enter the mix as well. This trio is a good combination of size and speed and will ensure NC State has a running back for every occasion.
NC State should have an improved defense this season. The Wolfpack return eight starters from last year’s squad and their top three tacklers as well. The secondary will be replacing two members, but should be solid with Jack Tocho back as well.
This season the schedule only has two weak non-conference opponents and the other two games are against Notre Dame and East Carolina. In cross-divisional play, NC State draws Miami and North Carolina and that put them at a disadvantage against its ACC Atlantic rivals. The Wolfpack will find it tough to get to a bowl in 2016 with this tougher schedule, but Doeren might not be around to see it if he only wins six games.
