There will be plenty of pressure on head coach Kevin Sumlin to win big this year. The negative momentum on campus has to come to a stop, and that only happens by winning and showing that the problems of last year and this offseason were a fluke. If Sumlin can get his troops to perform in the second half of the year better than he can run off prized quarterback prospects, the Aggies might be a threat in November.

2015 TEXAS AM AGGIES SEASON REVIEW
Expectations and high hopes were plentiful in College Station as Texas AM seemingly had its rebuilding year behind it, a favorable schedule and a new defensive coordinator. Those hopes and expectations didn’t last much longer than the Aggies’ 5-0 start. But it was fun while it lasted. The end result was another eight-win season and middle-of-the-SEC West finish for the Aggies.
The problems on the field arose in the second half of the year when the Aggies hit the meat of their conference schedule. The undefeated season came to an end with a spanking at the hands of Alabama, initiating a 3-5 run over the final eight games. The low point, however, didn’t come during the season, rather afterward.
The Aggies lost their top two quarterbacks, Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray, within a week of each other as they both said they would transfer. A team once stocked with quarterback talent was left with only Jake Hubenak to start the Music City Bowl game.
WHAT CHANGED
Trevor Knight, a dual-threat transfer from Oklahoma, projects as AM’s fourth different starting quarterback in four years. He starred in a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama in 2013 and passed for 2,230 yards in 2014, but he lost the job to Baker Mayfield last year. Knight must hold off a challenge from Hubenak, who made his only AM start in last season’s Music City Bowl loss to Louisville.
All eyes will be on new offensive coordinator Leo Mazzone and his handling of the Aggies offense and quarterback situation. Mazzone orchestrated UCLA’s offense with Brett Hundley and Josh Rosen executing plays before heading to College Station. The Bruins couldn’t get past the upper crust of the Pac-12, but did give Westwood a balanced offense with an exciting passing attack.

2016 TEXAS AM AGGIES SEASON PREVIEW
The real reason for some optimism entering 2016 is with the players themselves, as the Aggies appear to have some real leadership on this team. It begins with Knight, who only needed the spring to lock up the starting job. And he needs to be outstanding for the Aggies to have a good year.
The defense is going to be okay, yet the Aggies can’t win the SEC West because of it. The running game will be fine at times, but it’s hardly going to be elite. The aerial game has to produce at a high level. After the quarterback carousel and all the inconsistencies of the last few years, Knight has to be a full-season starter – and steady.
The Aggies have a favorable schedule by SEC standards, highlighted by an intriguing matchup with UCLA in the opener, two weeks before a telling game at Auburn. With the exception of Alabama on Oct. 22, AM’s toughest games all appear to be at home, a huge advantage considering rebuilt Kyle Field and the Texas heat. The Aggies are likely in line for an 8-4 regular season, which in this case could be viewed as both a successful and disappointing season.
