Texas Longhorns +8
West Virginia Mountaineers -8
Over/Under 58
ODDS ANALYSIS
Mountaineer game totals have spiked each of the last five weeks from 61 at Oklahoma to 81 last week as West Virginia snapped its four-game losing streak with a 31-26 win over Texas Tech. But this total has been bet down from the opener of 58 to 55.5 with the Longhorns defense showing strength and their offensive struggles on the road.
The under is also 6-0 in the Longhorns last six road games and 5-0 in the Mountaineers last five home games.
KEY MISMATCH
The key match-up is the West Virginia running game against the Longhorns defensive front.
The Mountaineers rumbled for 300 rushing yards last week in their win over Texas Tech. Wendall Smallwood is an unheralded runner in the Big 12 despite ranking No. 3 in the league rushing for 124 yards per game at 6.6 yards per rush. But the Longhorns defense has been solid ranking No. 2 in both rush and pass defense in the Big 12.
If the Mountaineers running game is slowed, there is not too much confidence in the passing game with Skyler Howard. He was just 12-for-23 for 149 yards and two interceptions in last week’s win against a porous Red Raiders pass defense.
KEY STAT
West Virginia senior punter Nick O’Toole leads the league with a 45 yard average and 40 yard net.
West Virginia is -7 in turnover margin while Texas is +5 in Big 12 play.
Texas is averaging a league-low 17 first downs per game in Big-12 play.
BETTING ANGLE
West Virginia is on a 0-5 ATS slide and 2-5 ATS in its last seven home games.
The Longhorns are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game.
The under is 11-2 in the Mountaineers last 13 Big 12 games.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
We called for the losing Longhorns to struggle again this season and they are delivering as expected. Texas has been blasted in its two true road games 50-7 at TCU and 24-0 at Iowa State. Yet they somehow beat Oklahoma as a huge ‘Dog on a neutral field.
Sure the price may seem a bit rich on the Mountaineers, who are 1-4 in league play while the Longhorns enter 3-3, but we have little confidence in the Longhorns on the road with their continued struggles.
Dana Holgorsen is superior on the sidelines despite less talent. Turnover troubles along with penalty problems with a league-high in Big 12 play also keep us off laying these points. The Mountaineers also have the inferior defense and the match-ups and overall talent favor Texas.
If the Longhorns can’t cover this number on the road then you know for certain this Texas coaching staff is clueless.
West Virginia 27, Texas 24
