After 29 years of Frank Beamer being the head coach at Virginia Tech, he was pushed out in the middle of the season following another difficult start. 2015 VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES SEASON REVIEW

After year after year of 10 win campaigns, the Hokies had been just an above average team since 2012 and that led to Beamer stepping down as the coach. It’s hard to say just how much he meant to Virginia Tech though. He was the longest tenured coach in college football when he stepped down and had built the program up from nothing. The Hokies have made 23 straight bowls with Beamer at the helm and that highlights more than anything what he meant to the program.

The offense had its best year since 2010 and got good, but not great, quarterback play from Michael Brewer and Brenden Motley. The two combined for 2858 yards and 24 touchdowns against 14 interceptions and made Isaiah Ford a 1000-yard receiver.

Virginia Tech was able to run the ball consistently last season with freshman Travon McMillian getting the bulk of the work. McMillian ran the ball for 5.2 yards a carry and cracked the 1000-yard mark as well. He emerged as the main running back after his performance against NC State and was the battering ram for the team the rest of the season.

Bud Foster is a legend in Blacksburg, but his defense was uncharacteristically a middle of the road unit last season. The Hokies allowed 26.3 PPG and all but three opponents scored at least 20 points on them. The numbers were somewhat inflated by playing powerhouse offenses like Ohio State and North Carolina, but still it was a shaky year for the unit.

WHAT CHANGED

The biggest changes obviously happened with the coaching staff. Frank Beamer was replaced by Justin Fuente and Fuente wasted no time dismissing OC Scott Loeffler and installing his own offense. The Hokies will throw the ball more than they did in seasons past, but the running game will still be emphasized.

Virginia Tech must replace four members of its front seven, but that might not be a bad thing with the defense allowing 4.6 yards per carry last season. More importantly, the defense not only kept Bud Foster as its DC, but also added two former coordinators as position coaches.

2016 VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES SEASON PREVIEW

Even though Motley returns, he isn’t the favorite to win the starting job as a senior learning an entirely new offense under Fuente. Instead, JUCO transfer Jerod Evans is expected to be the starter for the season opener although Fuente has insisted the battle is still ongoing. Evans has the size and arm strength to be a 300-yard passer in the right system.

Whoever wins the job will have the fortune of having the top three receivers from last season back, but none is more important than Isaiah Ford. He is a true playmaker and has shown the ability to torch receivers with his speed.

Bud Foster’s defenses are known for their aggressive style of play and it should be very difficult to throw on this secondary in 2016. The Hokies return all of their starters from last season and typically allow quarterbacks to complete less than 50 percent of their passes. If the run defense can toughen up, this should be a great unit in 2016.

Virginia Tech has perhaps the easiest two teams in cross-division play, facing Boston College and Syracuse, but games against Tennessee and East Carolina are tough tests out of the conference as well. In addition, the Hokies have to face Notre Dame in pseudo-ACC play and that will be a challenge for Fuente. Still, this team has the talent to compete for the ACC Coastal and even if it loses one or two in non-conference play, should get to at least seven wins.
