College Football Odds: Wake Forest Demon Deacons Season Win Total

Wake-Forest-Picks-2016

College Football Betting Online: Wake Forest has been a perennial laughing stock in the ACC and through two seasons of Dave Clawson’s tenure, things haven’t changed. However, the third year is usually when Clawson’s teams start to turn things around and that gives the fans in Winston-Salem a lot of hope.

2015 WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS SEASON REVIEW

Wake Forest didn’t improve record wise from 2014 to 2015, but there were signs of improvement all along the offense. The Demon Deacons went from having one of the worst rushing attacks ever, to just an anemic one last season. Wake Forest averaged 105 yards on the ground and although that’s not great, it’s a marked improvement from the 40 yards per game it averaged in 2014.

The passing attack improved as well despite QB John Wolford missing some games due to injury. Wolford completed almost 61 percent of his passes for nearly 1800 yards and threw for more interceptions than touchdowns, but took more chances than he did the season prior as Clawson showed more faith in him.

When Wolford was injured or Wake Forest needed more of a rushing threat, Kendall Hinton came in to take the snaps and he was good in his role as well. Hinton carried the ball for 390 yards and seven touchdowns on the season. He wasn’t a great passer, but his ability to tuck it and run helped the Demon Deacons to move the chains.

The defense didn’t improve much from this year to last, but did pitch a shutout in Wake Forest’s only conference win of the season, a 3-0 win against Boston College. The Demon Deacons ended up having a Top 40 defense last season, but did take a step back in allowing 5.6 yards per play.

WHAT CHANGED

Not much has changed really. Wolford should be healthy and ready to play for a whole season and the team will also get back WR Jared Crump who missed all of last season due to injury.

The bad news is that Wake Forest will be without its best defensive player from last season in Brandon Chubb. Chubb led the team in tackles and also had eight tackles for loss. His production will be sorely missed on this year’s team.

2016 WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS SEASON PREVIEW

In his three previous stops, Fordham, Richmond, and Bowling Green, Clawson turned the corner in year three and this team should definitely improve both record-wise and on the field this season. When Clawson took over, he gutted the team of upperclassmen and instead started underclassmen in order to build to this moment.

The combination of John Wolford and Kendall Hinton has the potential to keep defenses off balance, especially if Hinton improves upon his accuracy in his second season at Wake Forest. He wasn’t bad as a freshman, but he will be more deadly with his legs if he can keep people out of the box with his arm.

The running game needs to take a step forward if Wake Forest wants to reach bowl eligibility. Most of last year’s offensive line returns, but it remains to be seen whether or not Tyler Bell is a competent rusher. Wake Forest must average better than three yards a carry this season.

Finally, the run defense will need to have a solid season. Wake Forest doesn’t face any elite passing threats outside of Deshaun Watson at Clemson, and most teams in its side of the ACC prefer to run the ball. The Demon Deacons have to get better at stopping that in 2016.

Wake Forest should be favored in three of its four non-conference games and has an outside shot to get to a bowl this season. The Demon Deacons are going to take some steps forwards, but a seven win season seems extremely unlikely at this point and its far more likely that Wake Forest finishes the season with five wins.
