Match-ups of the Week

Virginia Tech vs. No. 9 Tennessee

Tennessee looks a lot more vulnerable than anyone thought coming into the season. The Volunteers should have lost to Appalachian State at multiple points in that game, but instead through luck and force of will pushed through and squeaked out a win at the end.

That game did show the Volunteers’ Achilles heel was still Josh Dobbs throwing the ball. Dobbs’ numbers don’t look awful in the grand scheme of things, but drives routinely stalled because the App State corners pressed the line of scrimmage and started playing run. That gave Dobbs the opportunity to beat single coverage and he just wasn’t able to.

Virginia Tech didn’t look like world beaters in its first game either, but that’s a lot more understandable under a new coach and a new offensive strategy. Justin Fuente is a different breed than Frank Beamer and the guys that have coached in the past at Virginia Tech. He likes to pass the ball around and made Paxton Lynch into a first-round pick at Memphis with his system. No matter what the Hokies will be more fun in 2017.

Iowa State at No. 17 Iowa

This has become one of the Internet’s most adored rivalries with a nickname that is not fit to print. There’s a lot of talk about throwing the records out when it comes to rivalry games and while that’s bunk in many of them, that’s not so in this one. This is the one game each year that Iowa State gets up for and the Cyclones will throw everything they have at the Hawkeyes in order to get the win.

Iowa is off to a good start with an easy victory over Miami of Ohio on the first Saturday of football. The Hawkeyes got solid play from CJ Beathard who didn’t throw an interception and the backfield duo of Akrum Wadley and LeShun Daniels Jr. put up fantastic numbers. However, as good as Iowa is playing, there’s a reason it has lost three of its last five against Iowa State.

The Cyclones may have lost in Matt Campbell’s debut to FCS Northern Iowa, but they will be raring to play Iowa again. Last season was the first time this decade that this rivalry wasn’t close and the Cyclones players are going to be as amped as they will all season here.
