For the second straight week, it looks like very little football will be played in the state of Florida. One of the premier football games of Week 3 has already been postponed due to Hurricane Irma, as Florida State and Miami will now meet on October 7. Other games throughout the southeast are expected to be cancelled or postponed in the aftermath of the biggest storm in the history of the Atlantic Ocean.
College Football Week 3 Odds at BookMaker.eu
Clemson at Louisville
Opening: Clemson -2.5
Current: Clemson -2.5
The Tigers made a statement with their win over the Auburn Tigers last week. Clemson was roundly considered to not have a chance to repeat as national champions because of the loss of Deshaun Watson, but this defensive line would like to revisit the matter. Christian Wilkins and Austin Bryant hounded Jarrett Stidham and made the Baylor transfer ineffective in the loss, but will face a different challenge against Louisville.
Lamar Jackson has the same gripe as Clemson in that no one expected either to repeat. Jackson wasn’t considered to have much of a shot at becoming the second player to ever win consecutive Heismans, but he is lighting up foes through the first two weeks of the season. His play has been the only thing keeping the Cardinals afloat as the defense has really struggled so far in 2017. He torched both Purdue and North Carolina, but neither of those defenses are the same caliber of Clemson’s.
Watching Jackson work against Clemson’s defense will be must-see viewing. The Tigers have the best defensive line in the country, but they know they have to be careful in getting after Jackson. If the ends push up too far, he will torch them with his legs, but if they don’t pressure him at all, he will pick them apart with his passing. Whoever wins this game immediately becomes the favorite to win the ACC Atlantic.
Oklahoma State at Pittsburgh
Opening: Oklahoma State -10
Current: Oklahoma State -13.5
Pittsburgh has struggled to get going offensively this season. The team lost a ton of talent and a brilliant head coach and has yet to really show it can move on from either.
However, don’t think that the Panthers have been toothless despite their 1-1 record. They went on autopilot early against Youngstown State in their season opener and played better than the scoreboard indicated against Penn State. Pittsburgh actually had 10 more first downs than its in-state rival and controlled the ball for almost 65 percent of the game. Turnovers killed them, but otherwise Pitt might have knocked off Penn State for the second straight year.
Oklahoma State blew out another overmatched opponent this week in South Alabama. Mason Rudolph was again unstoppable and James Washington once again caught a long touchdown pass early on to set the tone.
Early action has been all in favor of the Cowboys after their two early performances, but this is a precarious spot for them. Pittsburgh should not be a two-touchdown underdog and will give Oklahoma State all it can handle in this spot.
Stanford at San Diego State
Opening: Stanford -7.5
Current: Stanford -9
The Cardinal had no answer for USC on defense this week. Stanford gave up over 600 yards of offense to the Trojans and couldn’t even stick around despite being gifted two turnovers.
San Diego State fared much better against its PAC 12 South foe. The Aztecs took on Arizona State and Rashaad Penny tore up the Sun Devils defense. He ran for 216 yards and a touchdown in the win.
The Aztecs offense was one dimensional against the Sun Devils. San Diego State threw the ball on just 30 percent of its plays and mostly just wore down the Sun Devils run defense. They can’t do that if they want to be successful against the Cardinal, who will bounce back from a very poor performance against the run.
