College Football Week 4 Odds Update

College Gameday will be headed to the Big Apple for the first time in the show’s history this week and if that’s not an indictment of the games this week, we don’t know what is. There are some interesting matchups to be sure, but there isn’t a marquee game that’s appointment viewing like there is most weeks. There are only two games between ranked foes this week and since both road teams are expected to come back down to Earth soon, ESPN decided to spend the week in New York City instead of on campus somewhere.

TCU at Oklahoma State
Opening: Oklahoma State -10.5
Current: Oklahoma State -12

Money has already started to come in on Oklahoma State after its dominant performance last week. The Cowboys may have put up the most convincing performance of any team in Week 3, with Mason Rudolph lighting up Pitt’s defense. Rudolph averaged more than 16 yards per pass attempt against the Panthers and looked like a potential Heisman Trophy winner.

Even more impressive was how good the run defense looked. Oklahoma State has typically had a great offense in the Mike Gundy era, but the defense is usually lacking. The Cowboys defense held Pitt to just three yards per carry on the ground and that helped them control the clock and jump out to a 49-14 first half lead.

Don’t sleep on TCU though. Although the Horned Frogs have only faced one solid team, they thumped Arkansas two weeks ago. The defense is legit and the offense is once again scoring points as Sonny Cumbie’s offense has adjusted after an off year. Kenny Hill didn’t look great in the win against Arkansas though and will need to play better if TCU wants to pull off the upset.

Penn State at Iowa
Opening: Penn State -11
Current: Penn State -12.5

Both Vegas and the public are certainly believers in Penn State. Although the Nittany Lions opened as a double-digit favorite in a tricky road game against the Hawkeyes, the public pushed the line up a little bit more.

It’s not hard to fall in love with Penn State. The combination of Trace McSorley and Saquon Barkley in the backfield is a tag team worth drooling over and the team has some solid receivers too. This defense is one of the better units in the country as well and it will be hard for Iowa to move the ball against them.

The Hawkeyes are going to find a way to win seven or eight games like they always do, but don’t have much in the way of offense. They struggled to put up points against both Wyoming and North Texas and have not been able to find solid quarterback play now that C.J. Beathard is in the NFL. Iowa will try to ugly it up against Penn State and win with the home crowd cheering on its defense.

Mississippi State at Georgia
Opening: Georgia -6.5
Current: Georgia -6

Mississippi State proved that it is still a team to be feared last week against LSU. The Bulldogs jumped on the Tigers from the opening whistle and wouldn’t let go, running all over LSU’s front. It was amazing how much Dan Mullen’s bunch was able to dominate LSU in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs ran for almost 300 yards against the Tigers’ defense and held Derrius Guice in check on the ground.

Georgia knows it will have its hands full in this one. Although these Bulldogs are more talented and playing at home, Mississippi State is less than a touchdown underdog and has seen early line movement in its favor because of the coaching prowess of Mullen. No coach in the country may do more with less than Mullen. This will be a big test for Kirby Smart in his second year in Athens.
