Rivalries new and old take center stage this week in college football. Although some of the older ones look like they are duds, we saw last week that mayhem can happen in any given week of college football. No matter what you may think about one team’s chances in a specific week, these are still highly impressionable and emotional kids and they can play down or up to their competition depending on their mindset. Now, let’s take a look at some of the top games of this week.
College Football Week 5 Odds at BookMaker.eu
Clemson at Virginia Tech
Opening: Clemson -5.5
Current: Clemson -6.5
This line came out too low because of Clemson’s performance against Boston College last week. The Tigers were knotted at seven with the Eagles heading into the fourth quarter before turning on the jets and ripping off 27 straight points to pick up the win.
Clemson looked bad, but this was a total trap game. The Tigers were coming off of big wins against Auburn and Louisville in consecutive weeks and were due for a letdown before taking on perhaps the best team in the ACC Coastal in Virginia Tech.
For its part, Virginia Tech posted another cupcake this past weekend, but we haven’t seen the Hokies take on a real opponent since their season opener against West Virginia. The Hokies snuck by the Mountaineers in that game, but look far from unbeatable.
I expect this line to rise over seven by kickoff. This Clemson team has a phenomenal defense and it’s hard to imagine Virginia Tech doing much on offense against it. Although Justin Fuente is a great coach, this defensive line will likely wreak havoc on the Hokies’ front.
Oklahoma State at Texas Tech
Opening: Oklahoma State -11
Current: Oklahoma State -11
The spread isn’t what to watch in this one, it’s the total. Both of these teams have quick strike offenses that have shred most of the defenses they have faced this year. Oklahoma State’s star receiver James Washington exemplifies this, with a mind numbing 27.4 yards per catch average on the year.
He and Mason Rudolph may have a field day against this Texas Tech defense. The Red Raiders were lit up by Arizona State when these teams met two weeks ago and had to go on a last-minute touchdown drive in order to get the win.
Don’t be surprised to see this total open in the 80s. The last four meetings between these teams have all had at least 80 total points.
USC at Washington State
Opening: USC -4
Current: USC -4
Friday night lights will be special once again in Pullman as perhaps the week’s best game will be this one. The Cougars avoided their usual early season pitfall by beating the FCS team they faced in their home opener and also scored a huge win in Boise. Wazzou has dominated its other three games aside from Boise and its offense has lit up its competition.
As for USC, we hear this every year about the Trojans. Every year we hear that this team is back to the halcyon days under Pete Carroll, but more often than not, the season runs off the rails by the end of September and the coach is fired at the end of the year.
Clay Helton won’t be fired with the team sitting at 4-0, but USC has really looked out of sorts at times. The defense just isn’t that good as the Trojans have given up at least 20 points to every opponent and Sam Darnold has not made a strong case for the Heisman Trophy. Somehow this team is undefeated, but the only game it really held its own in was Stanford this year.
This game looks like its lined just right and I don’t expect more than a half-point swing either way.
