If the SEC season goes anything like the opening game of the year did for the Vanderbilt Commodores, don't expect to see a lot of "anchoring down." The 'Dores tend to be a little frisky in games like these, but the Georgia Bulldogs are certainly game for the challenge of heading to Nashville for their SEC opener on Saturday.
ODDS ANALYSIS
For the second straight weekend, Georgia is going to prove to be a really square team. The Dawgs opened up at -19 on the road and have since risen to -19.5, a number which we only see going up as the week progresses.
It's also going to be the second straight week that all of the line movement goes against Vanderbilt. The Commodores opened as short favorites against Western Kentucky, but in the end, they closed at +2. There were even some bettors who cashed winning wagers on Vandy in that odd 14-12 loss to the Hilltoppers at +2.5.
KEY MISMATCH
The one place the Commodores are going to get pushed around in this game is up front. The Georgia offensive line is just flat out massive, averaging over 310 pounds per lineman. The Vandy defensive line is undersized and just isn't physical enough to match wits with the Dawgs.
Last week against Louisiana Monroe, the Bulldogs just kept running the football effectively no matter who had the ball in their hands. Take out a sack and a kneel down at the end of the game, and what was left for the Georgia rushers was 35 carries and 251 yards, a tick over seven yards per rush.
If that's what happens again in this game, the Commodores are in a ton of trouble.
KEY STAT
28.1 – The number of yards per kick return Isaiah McKenzie averaged last season for Georgia. Vanderbilt ranked second to last in the SEC in kick return coverage last year at over 24 yards per return allowed, and that could heavily factor into this game.
BETTING ANGLE
The Bulldogs have played seven straight September games over the total dating back the last three seasons. They started off this season with an over against Louisiana-Monroe, even in a game which didn't quite finish thanks to Mother Nature. UGA's first five games all went past the total last year, including a 44-17 romp over these Commodores.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Even though Vandy played a wretched game against Western Kentucky that featured about as much offense as your average NFL Europe game used to, we still think this one is going to end up featuring some fireworks thanks to the ground game of the Bulldogs.
Nick Chubb and Keith Marshall make an explosive duo in the backfield. Greyson Lambert isn't going to be asked to do a heck of a lot, but Mark Richt has made it clear early on that he is going to let his new quarterback take some shots down the field.
Remember that Vandy played a little more up-tempo as well against Western Kentucky, though the final score certainly won't show that. Running 75 plays isn't a huge deal in college football, but that's a big number for the Commodores. If they get into the 70s in this one, they're going to end up pushing this game past the number.
In terms of the spread, we think things will be close. Wait on Vandy and get the best line possible.
