The Wisconsin Badgers and Western Michigan Broncos square off in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Monday, January 2, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., ET. ESPN will televise the game live.
As the adage goes, something's got to give in this year’s Goodyear Cotton Bowl when the Wisconsin Badgers take on the Western Michigan Broncos. Kickoff for the game is at 1:00 p.m., ET, January 2, 2017 and these two teams are completely different in many ways. The Badgers rank fourth in the FBS in scoring defense and love to create turnovers. Meanwhile, the Broncos rank eighth nationally in scoring offense at nearly 44 points a game and have given the ball away fewer times than any team in the country, of course many point to the lack of competition that Western Michigan faces in the weaker MAC Conference. The oddsmakers aren’t buying into the Broncos success of being undefeated as they have them as a 7-point underdog.
No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers vs No. 15 Western Michigan Broncos
January 2, 2017
AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas - 1:00 p.m., ET - ESPN
No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers -7.5
The Badgers lead the FBS in time of possession thanks to a solid defense and an offense that loves to run the ball and does not turn the ball over. Wisconsin has been great at taking early leads and then wearing down opponents with a steady dose of tailback Corey Clement who averages close to 25 carries a game. It’s boring at times but year after year it wins games.
Wisconsin is the type of team that waits for the opposition to make a mistake and then pounces on it. The defense ranks second in the FBS with 21 interceptions, and the team's plus-11 turnover margin is tied for sixth nationally. The Badgers also rank second in fewest penalties per game. Bottom line is that Wisconsin is a smart team that rarely hurts themselves. If you are going to beat them, you have to limit your mistakes and not turn the ball over.
No. 15 Western Michigan Broncos +7.5
Western Michigan wrapped up a perfect 13-0 regular season with a 29-23 win over Ohio in the MAC championship game. The Broncos won their games by an average margin of 24 points this season, going 9-3-1 ATS in the process.
Zach Terrell leads the Broncos attack and was one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the nation, passing for 3376 yards and 32 touchdowns while throwing only three interceptions. Jarvion Franklin and Jamauri Bogan combined for 2165 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns as well.
Opening Line at BookMaker.eu: Wisconsin -7.5, Total 54
The line hasn’t moved much on either the point spread or the game total but the heavy hitters will wait until gameday to get the full limit and then we may see some movement.
THE PLAY
The Badgers are 17-0 in their last 17 games against MAC Conference competition so you would think that they will win the game. After losing in a heartbreaker to Penn State in the Big 10 championship game, Wisconsin will be motivated to make one last statement to prove they are an elite top five ballclub. The Badgers have the better athletes and will win this game by double-digits and hand Western Michigan their first loss of the season. Wisconsin 34, Western Michigan 21.
