Mark Richt has made it a point this offseason to let his Georgia Bulldogs know that they are going to be a more physical team this year than they have been in the past, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
That could be really bad news for the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks, who are probably going to end up leaving Athens just happy to have been paid for showing up.
ODDS ANALYSIS
Every year, you see these huge spreads right off the bat, as the teams in power conferences beat up on clubs from conferences like the Sun Belt. This ULM/UGA game is no exception.
The Dawgs are laying five touchdowns along with a total of just 54, which insinuates that the Warhawks are going to be good for just 9.5 points or so.
KEY MISMATCH
It's all about the offensive line for the Bulldogs. They've got four returning starters up front, and they have a bruising running back in Nick Chubb who many think can win the Heisman Trophy this year if he stays healthy.
The Warhawks run a 3-3-5 defense, which lends itself to getting run upon in the first place.
Yes, six of the team's seven top tacklers are back from last year, and this is a senior-laden group, but this is a really poor situation to be in, especially when you consider the average size of the linemen up front for ULM comes in at a tick under 260 pounds against an offensive line for Georgia which features all sorts of 300-pound hulking wrecking balls.
KEY STAT
58 – The number of first downs the Warhawks managed last year on the ground. If they aren't able to run the ball with Kaylon Watson in this game, something we don't suspect will happen, it'll be a long day for the team which had the worst offense in the Sun Belt a season ago.
BETTING ANGLE
The over is 6-0 in Georgia's last six games against Sun Belt foes, and most of that is due to the fact that it has been murdering teams at this level. Yes, the Warhawks aren't going to have all that much in the way of offense in this game, but even one touchdown might be enough to get to this total if the Bulldogs play at their best.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
New UGA OC Brian Schottenheimer is going to bring a new tougher look to the Bulldogs this year, and that is going to end up making life easy for Greyson Lambert, who was named the starting quarterback just this week.
Last season, Chubb had some huge games when he had the chance to replace the injured Todd Gurley, and averaging over seven yards per carry in this game isn't out of the question by any stretch of the imagination.
Louisiana Monroe is no lock to score anything in this game, which is why we're going to stay away from the total, but we have no problem laying the five touchdowns, even though it isn't a practice we recommend doing often.
