A Sunshine State rivalry and No. 12 Florida State will shoot for its sixth straight win over Miami. This is Miami’s ACC opener while Florida State is 2-0. The Seminoles were undefeated were No. 2 in the country last season when they rallied from a 23-7 deficit in the second quarter to beat the Hurricanes 30-26 and cover the short spread.
Now FSU is laying 9.5-points and the total has been bet up to 50.5 from the 49-point opener.
WHEN MIAMI HAS THE BALL
Head coach Al Golden is losing support, but not due to his offense through four games as the Hurricanes are averaging 37 points per game to rank No. 2 in the ACC with 460 yards per game. Miami has faced a pair of quality opponents in Cincinnati and Nebraska in its last two games.
They hit the road for their ACC opener having lost five straight to Florida State including last year’s game when they blew a 23-7 lead.
Miami leads the ACC in field goals with 12, and the offense will need to convert more red zone opportunities into touchdowns as Florida State is allowing just 11 points per game and 281 yards per game at 4.1 yards per play, but the Seminoles have faced poor quarterbacks.
The Hurricanes are averaging 6.5 yards per play and a solid 5.2 yards per rush despite just 34 rushes per game, but FSU can be run on as the Seminoles allow 140 rushing yards per game and 3.8 yards per rush.
Quarterback Brad Kaaya leads the ACC’s top passing attack and he’s averaging 273 passing yards per game, but FSU’s pass defense is top-3 in the ACC allowing 141 passing yards per game. Coach Al Golden said the main areas of emphasis in preparing for FSU will be pass protection and improving on third down.
WHEN FLORIDA STATE HAS THE BALL
Star running back Dalvin Cook is day-to-day with a hamstring injury, and his absence would be significant as he’s averaging 142 yards per game and 8.6 yards per rush. Johnathan Vickers will start while freshman running back Jacques Patrick will see his first extended action.
Quarterback Everett Golson has just three touchdown passes the last three games, but has yet to throw an interception this season. The FSU offense had just 217 and 329 total yards in road wins at Boston College and Wake Forest with a bye before playing the Demon Deacons.
Miami’s pass defense has been sub-par allowing 195 passing yards per game but a solid 53 percent completions against. But without a healthy Cook toting the ball, Golson will be even less effective. The Seminoles offense has been below average in two ACC games, and they will need to be significantly better to keep pace with the ‘Canes.
LIVE BETTING AND MATCHUP TRENDS
These two teams power ratings have held steady the entire season and the line is as expected despite Miami coming off a road loss at Cincinnati last Thursday. Miami is 2-7 ATS in its last nine road games while the Seminoles are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.
The under is 7-1 in Miami’s last eight ACC games and 9-1 in Florida State’s last 10 home games. Florida State is 5-14 ATS in its last 19 games but has covered the last two against Miami.
Note that Miami had two touchdowns negated by penalties against Cincinnati in defeat last week, and the Hurricanes offense is the best Florida State will have run up against this season. Miami has the value in this contest, so in live betting take any additional adjustment in price should the ‘Canes fall behind, as they have the offensive weaponry to move the ball.
Florida State cannot be trusted right now laying these points against a very motivated and redemption-seeking Miami team, and laying live betting prices on the Seminoles is hardly advised.
