Alabama is loaded for another run at college football’s national championship. Sure the Crimson Tide has a few holes to plug on both sides of the ball, but coach Nick Saban’s roster is loaded with talent.

The Tide is the SEC favorite until proven otherwise, but the conference’s West Division is a meat grinder. And there remain a stunning amount of ifs for a program like Alabama’s

Things could be better for the Tide in 2015. They draw both of the SEC East’s most talented teams in Georgia and Tennessee and this year’s Iron Bowl is in Auburn. They also open the season with a neutral site game against Big Ten West favorite Wisconsin in Arlington, Tex. But the Tide does get Ole Miss, Arkansas and LSU at home, leaving more manageable road dates against Texas AM and Mississippi State. Three body bag non-conference games are spread out giving Alabama a break between more challenging opponents.

SEASON WIN TOTAL

Even if the Tide lose both their big road games at Georgia and Auburn, they could still reach 10 wins by running the table at home, winning in College Station and Starkville, and dumping Wisconsin in the opener. But the 2015 SEC West is so deep that expecting any single team to hit 10 wins is a stretch, particularly one with as many questions on offense as Alabama.

OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK

It’s been a long time since Alabama’s been forced to replace so much of its offense. Blake Sims, the single-season passing record holder, top receiver Amari Cooper and the school’s No. 4 all-time rushing leader T.J. Yeldon are gone. Oh, and three of the five starting linemen depart as well. Lane Kiffin has a big challenge in his second season as the Tide’s offensive coordinator.

But the Tide has been stockpiling top recruiting classes for years, leaving plenty of talented players ready to take on leading roles. The biggest question, however, is who will be the team’s starting quarterback? Neither Jake Coker nor David Cornwell has seized control of the position battle, but Coker is the favorite at -225 to be the team’s starter on opening day. Chris White, the team’s top returning wideout, caught all of 15 passes in 2014 and the O-line produced the Tide’s lowest yards per carry since 2008.

DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK

With inexperience on offense, the burden will be on Alabama’s defense. Again, the strength of the unit is the front seven. The line is as deep and talented as it’s been in years with starters A’Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed back. They’re big, but mobile enough to face the fast-paced spread offenses that have become common in the SEC.

The secondary was an issue last season and Landon Collins isn’t around to help out. Several players are competing for starting jobs in the defensive backfield and the Tide will have to plug the leaks in the secondary that created major problems against Auburn and in the Sugar Bowl loss to Ohio State. The defense should be among the best in the nation if the secondary is solidified.

SEASON PREDICTION

The Tide opened with the third best odds to win the National Championship at +801, behind only Ohio State and TCU. Expect Alabama to be in the hunt for the SEC West title and a trip to the conference title game. This season’s Iron Bowl rivalry game could be ramped up with a trip to Atlanta on the line.

But there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Tide heading into the season, particularly on offense with several accomplished playmakers gone. Betting on any SEC West team to run the divisional gauntlet, win in Atlanta and take back-to-back College Football Playoff games is a lot to ask.

Alabama hasn’t lost a season opener since 2001, but a date with Wisconsin in the AdvoCare Classic at ATT Stadium will be a stiff test with an uncertain offense. Establishing a No. 1 quarterback is a priority and crucial for developing chemistry with so many new faces on that side of the ball.
