A year after winning the SEC Championship and falling short against Florida State in the national title game, Auburn backpedaled to an 8-5 record in coach Gus Malzahn’s second year.
But the Tigers are poised for a return to prominence in 2015. Malzahn’s offense will be one of the nation’s best and the defense should improve under new coordinator Will Muschamp.
2015 SCHEDULE
9/5: vs. Louisville
9/12: vs. Jacksonville State
9/19: at LSU
9/26: vs. Mississippi State
10/3: vs. San Jose State
10/15: at Kentucky
10/24: at Arkansas
10/31: vs. Mississippi
11/7: at Texas AM
11/14: vs. Georgia
11/21: vs. Idaho
11/28: vs. Alabama
An SEC West team that plays Georgia annually just isn’t going to avoid having one of the FBS’s toughest slates. But at least for Auburn, it’s not last year’s schedule. A neutral-site date with Louisville, and the Rebels, both sets of Bulldogs and Alabama all come to Auburn. Of course conference dates at LSU, Arkansas and Texas AM won’t be easy, but the Tigers also won’t complain about drawing Kentucky in one of their SEC road slots.
SEASON WIN TOTAL
Auburn’s win total opened at 8.5 and that’s right where it should be in the SEC West. Even with last season’s gauntlet of a schedule and sieve of a defense, Malzahn got the Tigers to eight wins. It seems hard to imagine that the addition of Muschamp and both end-of-season rivalry games coming to the Plains isn’t worth another win somewhere.
OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK
Few teams feel good about replacing six starters on offense, but Auburn should have little reason to worry. Gone are the days of Nick Marshall’s zone-read attack, replaced by a more balanced offense led by experienced backup Jeremy Johnson, who’s been brilliant in brief glimpses. There’s no shortage of talented receivers, led by D’haquille Williams, to step into the roles left by Sammie Coates and Quan Bray.
Talented freshman Roc Thomas will compete against Jovon Robinson, the nation’s No. 1 Juco transfer, for the right to take over the lead role in the backfield behind a beefy offensive line. A blend of experienced backups ready to take the next step, incoming talent ready to make an instant impact and the mind of Gus Malzahn leave the Tigers in good shape.
DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK
Auburn’s biggest problem late last season was its defense, which was helpless to stop teams late in games. Enter former Florida head coach Will Muschamp, who tries to repair a defense that hasn’t been dominant since the last time he roamed Auburn’s sideline as the DC. His toughest task will be fixing a pass rush that produced just 10 sacks in eight SEC games.
The group is as deep as a puddle but there are pieces to work with. The top three tacklers from 2014 are all back, along with Jonathan Jones, who picked off six passes and earned second-team All-SEC honors. The services of former Georgia safety Tray Matthews, who looked like a star before being dismissed for off-field transgressions, were added to the mix and he should be a physical presence in the back end.
SEASON PREDICTION
Some moving parts have to come together for Auburn to once again be a player in the SEC West, but Malzahn’s reputation as an offensive mind and Muschamp’s prowess on defense mean the Tigers are a safe bet to make some noise.
With Johnson at the helm, Auburn should be a dangerous passing team, and the combination of talent at both running back and offensive line, plus Malzahn’s history of producing 1,000-yard rushers, means Johnson should have a solid compliment. The pressure then falls on the defense, which collapsed down the stretch in 2014. If Muschamp gets the Tigers to 20-24 points against per game Auburn should be a contender and the Iron Bowl decides the SEC West.
The Tigers have the fifth-best chance of winning the national championship at +1305 on BookMaker, which seems a little short for any SEC team, given the difficulty of getting out of the conference and winning both playoff games.
