TCU just missed out on the College Football Playoff last season and the Horned Frogs are poised for another run. One thing is certain: the 2015 team will use last year’s playoff snub as motivation this fall.
Quarterback Trevone Boykin, a 2015 Heisman Trophy favorite at +552, was one of the most improved players in the nation last year and there’s no shortage of talent in Fort Worth.
2015 SCHEDULE
9/3: at Minnesota
9/12: vs. S.F. Austin
9/19: vs. SMU
9/26: at Texas Tech
10/3: vs. Texas
10/10: at Kansas State
10/17: at Iowa State
10/29: vs. West Virginia
11/7: at Oklahoma State
11/14: vs. Kansas
11/21: at Oklahoma
11/27: vs. Baylor
The Horned Frogs have a chance to be one of the best teams in the country this season and their schedule is a big help. But TCU will have to win on the road. They left Texas only twice last season before their Bowl game. This year they’re on the road five times, including a late season trip to Norman. They likely won’t play any meaningful games until November when they close the year at Oklahoma and host Baylor over the final two weekends.
SEASON WIN TOTAL
There’s no doubting TCU is a juggernaut. The Horned Frogs are talented and motivated and the best team in the Big 12. They will blast through September and their season will come down to the only four losable games: At K-State, at Oklahoma State, at Oklahoma and then the season finale against Baylor. It’s hard to imagine the Frogs losing three of those games. I think two losses is the max for this group.
OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK
Trevone Boykin set numerous school records from his quarterback position last season and ranked fourth in the nation in total offense. Imagine him with a year of experience in the “Air Raid” offense installed last season. Top receiver Josh Doctson, who set a single-season record for yards and touchdowns, will also benefit from a years experience.
The focus will be on properly replacing tailback B.J. Catalon. Aaron Green, who ran for nearly 1,000 yards despite not starting until November, is the most likely answer. They will operate behind an offensive line that returns four starters with 74 starts among them. With 10 starters back from the nation’s No. 2 scoring offense, the Horned Frogs should continue to wreck other teams.
DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK
If the Horned Frogs find one stop against Baylor in the waning minutes of a 61-58 loss last October, then they are in the playoff. And that defense loses six starters on the front seven and standout cornerback Kevin White. Two starting linebackers, including Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Paul Dawson, are also gone.
Coach Patterson has a reputation for enjoying defensive rebuilds and he has one on his hands. There will be some adjustments with only five starters returning, but Patterson stockpiles talented athletes on that side of the ball and there shouldn’t be a steep drop-off from last season’s top-20 unit.
SEASON PREDICTION
Let’s face it this is a very good football team. TCU has experience and playmaking at the offensive skill positions and a reliable history of defense under Patterson. But the Horned Frogs have their sights set on being more than very good. Last season convinced them they could go undefeated even in the Big 12 and be a playoff team. This season a perfect run through the Big 12 is likely and will leave the playoff committee no doubt.
TCU is a favorite at +765 to win the national championship but they first must be selected into the playoff field. Not playing a conference championship game last season hurt both TCU and Baylor, who tied for the Big 12 lead and cancelled each other out in the voters’ eyes. A showdown with Baylor looms on the final weekend of the regular season and with the game in Fort Worth and revenge on their minds, TCU takes the conference. Performing in hostile environments and managing expectations may be the toughest challenges of all.
