A light Friday night schedule of college football might be highlighted by the Arizona State Sun Devils, as they look to continue getting back on track against the New Mexico Lobos.
ODDS ANALYSIS
When Bob Davie took over the Lobos program, you could have written it in stone that the Lobos would have been 30-40 point underdogs in these pay-for-play games against teams like Arizona State. We're not saying that the Lobos really have a shot to win SU, but the fact that they are only +28 shows a lot of growth for the program.
KEY MISMATCH
It's not often that you say a non-Power 5 school, particularly one with as little stature as New Mexico has, could have an advantage in the trenches. However, in this case, the stats suggest the Lobos could have a shot.
They have eight sacks already this year, tying them for eighth best in America, and they are going against an offensive line which has had all sorts of problems against both of their first two foes.
Mike Bercovici, certainly due in part to the fact that he seemingly holds onto the football forever in the pocket, has been sacked more times than any other quarterback in America, and we aren't sure that's going to change under the Friday night lights.
KEY STAT
8 – The number of times the Sun Devils have fumbled the football early this year. Bercovici is guilty for sure, but so too is young back, Demario Richard, who is being featured in this offense for the first time in his career in 2015.
If ASU keeps putting the ball on the ground in this game, the Lobos are going to gain a lot of confidence in a hurry.
BETTING ANGLE
ASU has now failed to cover four games in a row dating back to last season, and the argument could be made that Todd Graham has made this team poison to bet on. Even last week's game against Cal Poly was a lot more of a struggle than it should have been for a team which many figured would be a fringe Top 25 outfit at worst in 2015.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
New Mexico has definitely found an identity under Davie. The team is going to run the ball on offense and blitz in nearly any situation defensively. Do the Lobos have the horses to win this game? Of course they don't. But they are in a situation where they can come closer to beating the big boys than they have in recent years.
We look at the 60-49 loss to Boise State last season as a bit of an indicator for this game.
We think this is going to be a fast game with a lot of momentum-changing plays. Asking for 109 points as we saw against the Broncos would be tough, but getting into the 70s isn't out of the question. Take the points with the Lobos and fade away on the Sun Devils until they prove they are worthy of your hard-earned money as such enormous favorites.
