If you don't know who the Toledo Rockets are, you certainly will if you're watching midweek college football these next three weeks. The men from the MAC still think they have a legitimate shot of earning the Group of Five bid to the New Year's Six bowls, but they're going to have to run the table to have any chance whatsoever. They'll state their first case on national television on Tuesday night against the perennial MAC monsters, the Northern Illinois Huskies.
WHEN THE NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUSKIES HAVE THE BALL
The names might change for the Huskies, but they're still the same up-tempo team live bettors have come to know and love. This team isn't quite as explosive as the ones of yesteryear, but points can still get put on the board in a real hurry.
Drew Hare flat out doesn't make mistakes, as he has tossed just three picks on 244 pass attempts. He's not the best passer in the world, but he's got great legs, calls a good game, and does so without turning the ball over all that much.
The Rockets are used to this sort of tempo playing in the MAC, but NIU can really get into warp speed in a hurry. The Huskies are averaging 77.3 plays per game, including 46.6 rushing attempts. It shouldn't be a shock that they average 11.1 points per game in the fourth quarter alone, almost a full touchdown more than Toledo.
If an upset is happening in live betting, it's happening in the fourth quarter of this one with a worn down Rockets defense on the field.
WHEN THE TOLEDO ROCKETS HAVE THE BALL
Remember the name Cody Thompson. He's Toledo's best wide receiver, and he can change a game in a hurry. Thompson already has 490 yards on just 22 receptions this year, and he's the owner of a whopping six plays of at least 40 yards on the season. All four of his touchdowns have come in his last four games, proving that he and Phillip Ely are starting to really get on the same page.
The Rockets though, are all about their running game. They tend to run some clock even though they, too get up to the line in a hurry. Terry Swanson, Damion Jones-Moore, Kareem Hunt and Marc Remy make up a nasty stable of tailbacks. All four will be a part of the game plan in this one, and the four will clearly have to get beyond 200 yards on the ground between them if Toledo wants to cover this game in live betting.
TREND TO TRACK
Even though these two teams run similar styles and can put points up in a hurry, the games between them have failed to live up to the offensive hype. Last season, there were just 51 points in this MAC clash, and no game between them has gone beyond 55 total points since a wild 63-60 game back in 2011.
The under, in fact, is 5-0 in Northern Illinois' last five road games against team with winning records, and it is 6-0 in its last six games played here in November as well. Live bettors know that points are coming, but they're going to have to come in real bunches to beat the total in this game.
