Last season, the Oregon Ducks and the Michigan State Spartans were locked in a thriller until the U of O pulled away thanks to Marcus Mariota and the offense finally figuring out Sparty’s “D”. Live bettors might think that's how this Saturday's game is going to play out between these two as well, but with this one being played in East Lansing, it could be a totally different game than the one at Autzen Stadium in 2014.
WHEN THE OREGON DUCKS HAVE THE BALL
Eventually, you know that Oregon is going to have its way with the Michigan State defense. It's not going to be easy, though. The Ducks don't have Mariota any longer, and for all of the hype surrounding Vernon Adams, he isn't going to be a top pick in the NFL Draft like Mariota was.
It's also worth remembering that this is just the second time in Adams' career that he’s had to go on the road and play against a big time team like this, the first of which came when he was at Eastern Washington. The stakes are significantly higher.
However, the Spartans have some problems of their own on defense. They weren't good in their first game without Pat Narduzzi calling the 'D' last week against Western Michigan, and though no one is hitting the panic button yet, missing Ed Davis, who had a huge game last year in Eugene, is a big problem.
WHEN THE MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS HAVE THE BALL
There's no question that the Spartans are going to have to score some points to win this game. They aren't used to having to win games lined in the 60s, but at 67.5 for this total and with the way the Oregon offense can roll up points in a hurry, some TDs are going to have to be scored by the home team.
Oregon's defense was dreadful last week against an Eastern Washington team which, as you might have noticed, had to play with what was scheduled to be its backup quarterback. Sure, the Eagles are good by FCS standards, but they're still an FCS team, and allowing 549 yards is borderline inexcusable.
Still, we don't like what we have seen out of Connor Cook this year. He wasn't voted in as a team captain for a reason, and his first showing against Western Michigan didn't make him look anything like the NFL quarterback he is projected to be. If Cook is on his game and making sharp throws, live betting on Sparty is going to be easy to do. If he is only completing around half of his throws again though, asking MSU to lay points is a really tough sell.
TREND TO TRACK
The Ducks have a history of being fantastic on the road in these big time matchups. Time and time again, they pull off games like this which they don't feel like they have any business winning, and they are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games on the road against teams with winning home records.
Considering the fact that they have been underdogs exactly one time in the last three seasons (and they won on the road at Stanford that day), live bettors are going to have to be tempted to take the points while they can.
