Vanderbilt Commodores at Ole Miss Rebels betting on ESPNU Saturday

Vaught Hemingway Stadium is going to be rocking for sure on Saturday night. The fans there will welcome their heroes, the Ole Miss Rebels home fresh off the first time they’ve ever won consecutive games against Alabama. But will there be a letdown against the Vanderbilt Commodores?

ODDS ANALYSIS

Now that Mississippi is officially a Top 5 team once again, it's quite understandable why it is going to be a huge favorite in this game at -27. It becomes even more notable that this spread is so high after watching the Rebs crush Vandy 41-3 last season in Nashville.

Ole Miss enters this game at a perfect 3-0 ATS to match its 3-0 SU mark, while the Commodores are 1-2 SU and 2-1 ATS.

Still, there’s reason to believe a letdown is looming and the pointspread states as such with it falling to -24.5 through the week. The total has also been bet down to 55.5 from the 59.5 opener.

KEY MISMATCH

The pass defense for Vanderbilt has been a lot better this season than you probably would think, and quietly, this could be a problem for Chad Kelly if he loses focus after last week's win. Even though Kelly's numbers were good last week in Tuscaloosa, anyone who watched that game knows that a lot of that was a matter of good fortune more than anything else.

The Commodores have allowed just 153.3 passing yards per game, and they have played stout ball in the secondary. Remember that Greyson Lambert just put up the best game in college football history in terms of completion percentage against South Carolina. Versus Vandy, he went just 11-of-21 for 116 yards.

KEY STAT

9 – The number of turnovers which the Rebels have forced this season. Their defense was fantastic against Alabama last week, helping lead them to a +5 mark in the turnover margin category.

Vanderbilt has eight turnovers in three games, and it has turned the ball over at least twice in all three of its games.

BETTING ANGLE

There's a lot to like here about Vanderbilt. Not only are the Commodores 7-1 ATS in their last eight visits to Oxford, but they are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games overall and are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 SEC games.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

If Vanderbilt had a quarterback, we would feel a lot better about taking it in this one. We're still going to back the Commodores, but we definitely are afraid of Johnny McCrary turning the ball over a ton.

That said, the game plan here for Vandy is certainly conducive to a cover against a big number like this. McCrary isn't generally asked to do a lot in terms of throwing the ball deep down the field, and you know that Ralph Webb is going to get the ball in his gut a lot.

Furthermore, you just know there is going to be a little bit of air let out of this stadium after the initial burst happens following the win over Alabama. This is a prototypical sandwich spot for the Rebs after beating the Tide and before a road game at Florida, and we'll see a lackluster effort as a result. There's no doubt Mississippi will win, but we sincerely doubt it will cover.
