Odds Analysis

Virginia is getting a lot of points and the bettors believe they can cover this spread, as 80 percent of the early action has settled on the Cavaliers.

The scoring total has been deemed too high as a vast majority of the money has been pounding the “under” for this matchup.

Virginia is 2-9 straight up and 5-6 against the spread this season. The Cavaliers have been an underdog in nine games and have a nice job of covering in five of them, which should give bettors who back them some confidence in that happening once again.

Virginia Tech is 8-3 straight up 5-6 straight up but hasn’t been great as the favorite, covering only three times in those eight attempts. The Hokies are 3-2 against the spread at home this season.

Player to Watch

Jerod Evans – The Virginia Tech quarterback has thrown for 2,792 yards and 24 touchdowns this season with five interceptions. In his team’s 34-31 win over Notre Dame last week, the junior was 22-for-29 with 267 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Evans has a completion percentage of 64.2 percent and has thrown for 300 yards or more in three games this season. He had a career performance against Pittsburgh on October 27th, throwing for 406 yards and two touchdowns. He also leads the team in rushing with 150 carries for 675 yards and seven touchdowns.

Virginia has not been great against the pass this season and could have its hands full with Evans in both phases. The Cavaliers are allowing more than 250 yards per game through the air, 181 yards on the ground and are giving up 32.1 points per game.

Key Stat

12. That’s how many times in a row that Virginia Tech has beaten rival Virginia in this rivalry. The Hokies won 23-20 in the teams’ most recent meeting last year.

Virginia Tech leads Virginia 55-37-5 all-time in this rivalry which dates back to 1895. The last time Virginia defeated Virginia Tech was back in 2003, marking the Cavaliers’ only win against the Hokies in the last 17 years.

The Hokies have traditionally been the more dominant program and this year is no exception. Virginia Tech has a ton to play for while Virginia’s season is winding down to a close, which is another factor going in the Hokies’ favor.

Free ATS Pick

Few are projecting Virginia to be able to hang around in this one from start to finish. The Cavaliers aren’t especially explosive offensively and have been poor defensively, so the statistics seem to portend a lopsided game.

This is a rivalry which will make the Cavaliers play hard, but it will be hard for them to contain Evans. Virginia Tech has to get out to a quick lead in order to have a chance to cover the spread, but expect that to happen. The Hokies will take away any suspense and cruise to pick up the ACC divisional title. The “under” is the right call since Virginia will have trouble scoring consistently.
