Week 5 College Football Odds - Oklahoma at TCU Game Preview

The Oklahoma Sooners will try and turn their season around as they visit the TCU Horned Frogs in a Week 5 matchup on Saturday on FOX. Oklahoma had a bye last week to think about their humiliating 45-24 loss to Ohio State and the Sooners are 1-2 for only the second time under head coach Bob Stoops. Oklahoma is getting a lot of respect from the oddsmakers as they are listed as road favorites against a TCU team that is 3-1 and ranked No. 21 in the country.

Kickoff for this regular season Week 5 game is set for Saturday, October 1, 2016, at 5 p.m. ET at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Odds Analysis

The Sooners opened up as 1-point favorites in this contest and the number quickly went to 1.5 on Sunday night. The wiseguys continued to pound the Sooners on Monday morning as the line went to 2, 2.5, 3 and then 3.5.

Based on how quickly this number went right past the key number of 3 there is a chance that the number will end up at 4 before all is said and done.

Based on what the Sooners have done so far this season it is surprising that the wiseguys are taking such a strong stand on Oklahoma but TCU hasn’t been anything special in their four games although the defense finally showed up last week in a 33-3 win over SMU.

Player to Watch

If the Sooners are to win this game and cover the spread then quarterback Baker Mayfield has to play well. He hasn’t gotten much help from his teammates in the first three games but Mayfield has stepped up and said all the blame is on him.

“It’s all on me at this point. I always hold myself to a high standard and high expectations. That’s how it should be. It’s just the fact that I haven’t met them.” Mayfield said, “I’m going to continue and try to push for that. Our backs are against the wall. We’re not in a good position – 1-2. That’s not how it should be here at Oklahoma. We’ll find our identity and fight back.”

Oklahoma is scoring over 35 points per game so the offense is not the big problem and Mayfield has thrown for nearly 800 yards in three games. He needs to put up big numbers because the defense is allowing almost 32 points per game.

Key Stat

Oklahoma has been very good of late in conference games going 6-1 ATS. They have also played well in October going 4-1 ATS in their last five games. The Sooners also bounce back well from losses as they are 25-11 ATS in their last 36 games following a loss.

TCU is also a good team in October as they are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games in the month and they have been good at home going 14-5 ATS in their last 19 home games.

Taking this game over the total could be the way to go as Oklahoma has gone over in 25 of their last 35 conference games. They have also gone over in 11 of their last 17 road games. TCU has gone over in their last four home games. The only concern is that five of the last six meetings have gone under.

Free ATS Pick

The Horned Frogs are 3-1 but they haven’t really looked very good as they had trouble against South Dakota State, lost at home to Arkansas and didn’t look that impressive against Iowa State. This will be a big test for TCU at home against an Oklahoma team that is in a must-win situation.

The wiseguys definitely seem to know something in this one so I will lay the points with Oklahoma and also take the game over the total.

College Football Odds: Oklahoma 45, TCU 34
