You're not going to find a play on the board in Week 5 which is more sharp than the San Francisco 49ers. It's easy to see why they might be the worst team in the NFL, but don't think that the oddsmakers don't know that. The New York Giants are coming off of a great game against the Buffalo Bills, but we really wonder just how strong they really are.
Eli Manning was one of the three quarterbacks coming into Week 4 not to throw a pick this season, but that spurt ended in the fourth quarter last week on a fairly awful interception.
However, many are going to look at the fact that he has seven touchdown passes on a team which has just two rushing touchdowns. That's why Odell Beckham Jr. is going to be the favorite to score the first touchdown on Sunday night.
Beckham continues to make some ridiculous catches, but he only has two touchdowns thus far this year. The 49ers have had some bad games, but they have also had some surprisingly stingy efforts as well like the one we saw last week against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.
That said, if we have to pick a Giant, as the public generally will, we would close our eyes and blindly try to pick a running back to do so. Both Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams have one rushing touchdown this season, and both have seen goal line duty.
Given the choice of the two, we think that Williams is the better bet. He's the more explosive back capable of making big time plays, and he seems to have the trust of Tom Coughlin right now in the biggest spots in games. Furthermore, Jennings is probably going to have the shorter odds of these two rushers, and we would rather have the longer odds than the shorter ones in this case.
However, we have a real dark horse here to score the first touchdown which we think you should consider. Last week at the end of the game against Green Bay, Anquan Boldin was seen on the sidelines looking like he had literally just lost his mind. He's clearly upset over how poorly things have gone for this offense, and the fact that he only has 15 catches for 124 yards on the season is problematic for a man who has posted 83 and 85 receptions in the last two years.
Last season, Boldin had 17 red zone targets, easily the most on the team. With Michael Crabtree, who was second in red zone targets and Stevie Johnson, third, now both playing with different teams, there's good reason to believe that a passing touchdown from in close could have Boldin's name on it.
Even this year, Boldin has five of the team's 21 red zone targets from Colin Kaepernick, though it should be noted that he only has one touchdown to show for his work.
The Giants don't have any particularly corner who can matchup with Boldin's size and strength when it comes to the red zone. The FSU man doesn't have the burners he used to, but his size and savvy might make him the most dangerous play as a double-digit priced underdog to score first in this game.
