Things are looking all too familiar for the Jaguars, who opened with one or zero losses through the first six games for the fifth consecutive season after a dreadful performance in a pick em home game with Houston last week. A trip across the pond to take on the injury-decimated Bills looms. Will Jags coach Gus Bradley suffer the same fate as Miami’s Joe Philbin after his trip to London?
ODDS
No line has been posted as of this writing while oddsmakers wait for news on the Bills’ quarterback situation. Even if Tyrod Taylor is unable to go, the Bills are likely a field goal favorite.
KEY INJURIES
Kyle Williams – Left the Cincinnati game in the fourth quarter and was later diagnosed with a sprained PCL. Buffalo’s starting defensive tackle is expected to miss several weeks. Stefan Charles or Corbin Bryant could step into the starting role.
Sammy Watkins – Was on crutches outside the Bills locker room following last week’s game after suffering an ankle injury late in the first half. He’s unlikely to play Sunday leaving the Bills without their top two receivers as Percy Harvin is questionable with a lingering hip injury.
Allen Robinson – Was helped off the field and limped to the locker room last week with a bruised left leg. He got tangled with a Houston defender when the injury occurred. He is listed as questionable for Sunday with Bryan Walters waiting to take his spot.
KEY MISMATCH
Jacksonville’s defense might be more of a mess than Buffalo’s. The Jags faced back-to-back teams that came into the game with one win. Yet both – Tampa Bay and Houston – beat the Jags by scoring more than 30 points. The 69 combined points allowed in those games is an indication of the problems that still exist on the defensive side of the ball. That’s where the Jaguars went out during the offseason and brought in four free agents and promptly labeled them starters. Yet the problems with the unit continue to mount. Last week, Jacksonville failed to record a turnover and had just one sack on Houston quarterback Brian Hoyer. The Jags were also as close to being back to full strength as they’ve been this year. Linebacker Paul Posluszny returned from an ankle injury and tackle Sen’Derrick Marks saw his first action of the season after recovering from offseason surgery. Now the question remains: Where does the defensive unit go from here?
KEY STAT
29.3 – Jacksonville’s points allowed per game. The Jags surrendered 69 points in the last two games and rank 30th in the NFL. Buffalo scores 24.2 points per game, but hasn’t scored more than 21 points in its last three games.
BETTING ANGLE
Buffalo is Rex Ryan’s team and the organization feels that he will put them in a position to compete in the AFC East. Still, defense is his bread and butter, and with the level of pass rushers he has on the roster, they should be getting to the quarterback more than they have this season. The lack of pressure reached a boiling point following the loss to Cincinnati when Mario Williams voiced his displeasure with Ryan’s defensive schemes that has called for him to drop back in coverage more often than he’s accustomed to. “Playing the call,” as Williams put it, resulted in three Andy Dalton touchdown passes and the second game with more than 30 points allowed at home. Throughout the season, defensive end Jerry Hughes and tackles Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus have expressed concern over what they’re being asked to do in this scheme.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
American football fans in the U.K. could have been treated to a better matchup than this one. The Bills are fielding a NFL Europe roster with several key regulars out of the lineup and quarterback Tyrod Taylor still questionable as he recovers from a knee injury. Harvin and Watkins are likely out as is running back Karlos Williams, leaving the Bills searching for offense. It probably won’t be difficult to find against the Jags, who have more trouble stopping opponents and made Houston’s Brian Hoyer look like an All-Pro last week. Jacksonville hasn’t figured out how to win games and until they do, they remain a risky bet. Even against the banged up Bills. Buffalo defenders have voiced their displeasure over how they play and Ryan shouldered the blame for the team’s inability to get to the passer. That changes this week and Blake Bortles is in trouble.
Buffalo 26, Jacksonville 18
