Just because the Green Bay Packers are huge favorites against the San Diego Chargers doesn't mean that you should be running to the betting windows to get a piece of Aaron Rodgers in fantasy football action against Philip Rivers.
It's easy to assume that Packer Rodgers is going to be in for a monster day. He's had a great year, tossing 13 TDs against two picks, and even though he was intercepted twice at home last week against the Rams, it still felt the sign of the Apocalypse when those passes actually fell into defenders' hands.
One has to imagine that Rodgers isn't going to throw an interception in this game, and he should make things happen with his arm and his legs. After all, we're talking about a man averaging a tick short of 28 fantasy points per game by BookMaker's scoring, and he's going against a defense which just let Josh Freaking McCown throw for 356 yards and two touchdowns two weeks ago.
Don't be so quick to rush to judgment, though. Rivers is theoretically going to be playing this whole game from behind, and he isn't a slouch. He's got three games this year with at least 350 passing yards already, and he has had at least two touchdown passes in four of his five games.
No, Rivers isn't the same threat on the ground as Rodgers, but the fact of the matter is that he has averaged a healthy 23.4 fantasy points per game as well. With Antonio Gates now back in the fold, there is going to be more passing down by the goal line. It's not like the Chargers were a great rushing team from in close anyway. They only have two rushing touchdowns in five games, and one of those two came from a shotgun draw instead of a traditional goal line set.
Odds have it, you're going to be getting at least six or seven points on your side if you take Rivers, and we think there's a great chance for the San Diego quarterback to get enough points playing from behind in garbage time to pay dividends, even against one of the best fantasy quarterbacks in the NFL.
LACY COULD CRUSH FANTASY MATCHUP NO MATTER THE FOE
The Chargers are allowing a stunning 5.1 yards per carry, and a week after trying to slow down Le'Veon Bell for a full 60 minutes, it's going to be tough to get ready for another bulldozer like Lacy, particularly on the road on a short week.
We've really yet to see Lacy bust out this season; after all, he's only averaging 9.0 fantasy points per game a year after averaging 16.2. However, we know that Lacy has a lot of potential here against that San Diego defense.
If Lacy can get the ball in his hands 20 times in this one, we suspect he'll easily end up over the 100+ yard mark.
No matter who Lacy is matched up against, you have to like your odds of him having more touchdowns. Melvin Gordon still hasn't had a touchdown early in his career, and though Danny Woodhead has gotten some goal line work, he still isn't on the field often enough to scare us. The potential is there for sure for both of these men, but Lacy is the proven commodity and should be bet accordingly, especially when you consider the fact that Green Bay should be playing this whole game from ahead.
