When you think of playoff teams and division winners, you generally think of teams with great passing games. The Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals clearly don't fit in that category. There isn't a slew of confidence in either quarterback situation at this point heading into the biggest game of the year for both teams on Monday Night Football in Week 16.
You can find weekly head-to-head fantasy matchup odds at BookMaker.eu.
What really makes this fantasy matchup tough to handicap is not knowing who is going to be under center for the Broncos. Peyton Manning became the lord of the interception in what might be his final season in the NFL, while Brock Osweiler hasn't put up a single point in the second half of consecutive games. Manning still has a bum foot. Osweiler hurt his shoulder last week.
Gary Kubiak told reporters that his offense was going to be, "starting from scratch" this week, something that you never like to hear out of a team on the verge of an epic collapse.
All we can do is go off of Kubiak's history at this point regardless of who is under center. Either way, Kubiak is going to desperately try to get the ground game going with Ronnie Hillman and/or C.J. Anderson. Neither one has been effective for the most part this year, though Hillman has shown the greater ability to bust games open.
Either way, that's bad news for the quarterbacks. If you combine Osweiler and Manning this year, you only have an average of 16.3 fantasy points per game by BookMaker's standards.
There's also a threat that both Manning and Osweiler could end up playing in this game as to not put all of the pressure on either man. If that happens, this is obviously a nightmare for fantasy players.
However, it's just really hard to trust A.J. McCarron at this point in his career, even if he does turn out to be a huge underdog in this fantasy battle. He's going against arguably the toughest secondary in the NFL, and you can bet that Aqib Talib and the gang will want to show a lot better this time around against Cincinnati than it did last week against Pittsburgh when Ben Roethlisberger lit the Broncos up.
Denver's pass rush is one of the best in the league as well, and if McCarron is asked to hold the ball for too long, the Bengals are going to be in a lot of trouble.
Here's the positive when it comes to McCarron: He throws a pretty darn good deep ball. A.J. Green has now caught one long ball in two straight games from McCarron, while Marvin Lewis has a long TD to his credit as well. Neither will run tremendously complex routes, something that should make life a little easier on McCarron, and you just know that Hue Jackson is going to take his shots.
However, it's still not advisable to put too much stock in McCarron. He went 15-of-21 last week for 192 yards and a TD, but that game came against San Francisco, not against Denver. This is Cincinnati's second straight trip to the West Coast, and it comes at a time where it could all fall apart for the offense if the ground game produces less than two yards per carry as was the case last week.
It wouldn't shock anyone if McCarron finished the day something like 8-of-22 for 105 yards and three picks. Then again, with the way the Broncos are playing right now offensively, that might be a number good enough to actually win this fantasy showdown.
