Rex Ryan is a peculiar man. He drives around in a pickup truck with a Buffalo Bills logo on the side of it, and he says things like, "I'd rather have the more aggressive team on the field," almost promoting the fact that he was okay with his team committing a season-worst 17 penalties last week in a loss to the Giants.
However, he has a lot going for him going into Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans which could give live bettors a big shot in the arm.
WHEN THE BUFFALO BILLS HAVE THE BALL
The hits just keep on coming for the Bills. Last week, they had to play without both LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins. Now, they might have to play without both men and Karlos Williams.
Williams has a concussion and will either be cleared or sat down later in the week. If he can't go, assuming that McCoy doesn't make a truly speedy recovery from a hamstring problem which was initially scheduled to keep him out for a month, we're not really sure what the Bills are going to do in the backfield. Boobie Dixon is next in line, but he's really more of a plodder than an explosive runner.
That might work for Ryan and his generally conservative offense, but it doesn't work when you're laying points on the road in live betting.
Keep in mind that Tyrod Taylor might have been exposed just a bit as well. Last week against the Giants, he went just 28-of-42 for 274 yards with a touchdown and a pick, and he wasn't really able to use his legs to get to the outside either. The Titans have been sitting at home doing their homework for the last two weeks thanks to a bye, and the fact of the matter is that their offense is largely the same as the one Buffalo runs, which should give them an edge on the defensive side of the ball.
WHEN THE TENNESSEE TITANS HAVE THE BALL
This is where Ryan makes his money. Rookie quarterbacks average 9.1 worse points per game in terms of QBR against Ryan defenses than they do against any other team in the NFL. Yes, it hasn't always translated into success for bettors, but in 19 games against rookie pivots since he has become a head coach, Ryan's defenses have been relentless and dominant.
The foot will not come off of the gas pedal at all, and Marcus Mariota needs to be aware of that.
The offense for Tennessee is still stagnant. The Bishop Sankey experiment has failed miserably in the backfield, and though Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker might make for decent fantasy football plays, neither is truly an elite level receiver, nor should either be truly leading a club in receiving on a game in, game out basis.
TREND TO TRACK
The Titans failed to cover their last six games of last season, but all of a sudden, they are on a bit of a roll as underdogs in games like these. They should've won a very similar game two weeks ago versus the Colts, losing 35-33 in a game which was only decided in the dying seconds.
The over has been a popular play for both of these sides, too. It's well-documented that Buffalo was playing great offensively before last week's dismal showing against the Giants, but the Titans are quietly 3-0 for over bettors, too.
Keep an eye on the weather on Sunday in Nashville. If Mother Nature adds any sort of extra wind or rain into the mix, both of these offenses should end up stuck in neutral, and those over marks we've been talking about could all be moot.
