No one is going to confuse the NFC East with the best division in football. That doesn’t make divisional matchups any less significant, and we have a good one on Monday Night Football when the Eagles welcome the division-leading Giants to town. The Eagles broke loose for a season-high 39 points last week, cashing the over for the first time this season. The over is 8-2 in their last 10 MNF games.
ODDS
Philadelphia opened as a 4.5-point favorite with a total of 49. The Eagles are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games against the Giants. The line was wagered to -5 while the total spiked to 50.
KEY INJURIES
Odell Beckham Jr. – Is listed as questionable because of a hamstring injury. He sustained the injury last week and has not practiced. Fellow receiver Ruben Randle is probable with an injured hamstring. He’s been limited in practice this week.
Nelson Agholar – The Eagles’ starting receiver has been ruled out for Monday’s game with an ankle injury. Josh Huff is likely to get more snaps working with Riley Cooper and Jordan Matthews in three-receiver sets.
Ryan Mathews – Is nursing a groin injury and is listed as questionable. The team’s rushing leader will relinquish snaps to DeMarco Murray and Darren Sproles.
KEY MISMATCH
Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford may be inclined to test a secondary that will be without it best cornerback. The guy throwing the ball for Philly has been good lately, with his best game in an Eagles uniform last week. Bradford completed 32 of 45 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in a win over New Orleans. After throwing just three touchdowns in the first three games of the season, Bradford has five in his past two and is poised to have a big performance against a Giants team that ranks last in the NFL in pass defense and is without starting cornerback Prince Amukamara. The Giants are allowing 304.2 yards per game through the air, but held their past two opponents to less than 300 while facing two of the league’s least prolific passers in Tyrod Taylor and Colin Kaepernick.
KEY STAT
3 – The Giants take good care of the football on offense with just three turnovers this season. Only New England has fewer. The ball-hawking Eagles defense has 13 takeaways, tied for second-most in the NFL.
BETTING ANGLE
The Eagles got their season back on track last week with a win over the Saints and look to keep the momentum of that performance going with a NFC East confrontation with the division-leading Giants. New York sits on top of the division with a 3-2 record while the Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins are all floundering below .500. The divisional race is still wide open, but the Eagles need a victory to keep the Giants from pulling away. Additionally, the Eagles are still without a win inside the division, having already lost to Dallas and Washington. Another loss within the division would put them in a deep hole for the tiebreaker, with every team still in contention. The Eagles can get back to .500 with a win and the odds are in their favor. Philly is 11-3 SU and ATS in their last 14 meetings with the Giants.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Eagles had their best performance of the season in last week’s romp over the Saints, and the running game finally clicked. With so many changes during the off-season, early struggles were expected for Philly. Luckily for them, the rest of the division is having problems as well. While the Giants boast the second-best run defense in the NFL, that is likely attributed to their difficulties in pass defense. With Amukamara out, watch for Bradford and the Eagles to have some success in the passing game. Bradford appears to have a better grasp of Chip Kelly’s offense, looking more confident and decisive the past two weeks. He will need to cut down on the turnovers, however. Two picks in the red zone last week didn’t hurt Philly, but could mean trouble against the Giants. The Eagles will get back in the NFC playoff conversation with a cover win.
