New York Jets at Oakland Raiders NFL betting in Week 8 on CBS Sunday

Jets-at-Raiders-Oct30

The Raiders matched last season’s win total with a victory in San Diego last week and are showing signs of becoming a factor in the AFC. The visiting Jets make their first West Coast trip this season and their highly-ranked defense could be a roadblock for Oakland’s emerging offensive stars.

ODDS

New York opened as a 1.5-point favorite with the line being wagered to -3. The Jets are 2-0-1 ATS on the road this season and 4-1-1 ATS overall. Oakland is 1-2 SU and ATS at home. The total opened at 44.5 and rose to 45.

KEY INJURIES

Nick Mangold – The Jets’ starting center exited last week’s game after suffering a neck injury. He sat out practice earlier in the week and is listed as questionable, though he wouldn’t rule out playing. Dakota Dozier and Wesley Johnson split snaps during the week.

Calvin Pryor – Left the New England game with a left ankle injury and is questionable to play against Oakland.

Neiron Bell – Suffered a knee injury in last week’s game and is out indefinitely. He was seeing increased snaps at outside linebacker and is the only member of Oakland’s 53-man roster who has been ruled out for Sunday’s game.

KEY MISMATCH

The Raiders are bringing some excitement back to the East Bay with offensive stars Derek Carr, Amari Cooper and Latavius Murray, along with a talented defense. Carr completed 24 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns last week, Cooper had five catches for 133 yards and a score, and Murray ran for 85 yards and a touchdown as Oakland built a 37-6 lead before holding on for a win at San Diego. Things figure to get a lot tougher against the NFL’s second-ranked defense. New York has seven sacks over its last three games after dropping Tom Brady three times last Sunday. Muhammed Wilkerson has a team-high five on the season. The Jets own the league’s top rushing defense with 71.5 yards allowed per game after holding New England to 16. The Jets also have one of the best secondaries in the league with Darrelle Revis likely assigned to Cooper, in what should be an exciting matchup.

KEY STAT

15 – New York’s takeaways on the season. The Jets are third in the NFL in forcing turnovers and rank sixth with a plus-4 margin. Oakland has coughed the ball up nine times this year and is plus-2 in turnover margin.

BETTING ANGLE

The Jets will travel outside the Eastern time zone for the first time this season when they go cross country for a visit to northern California. New York will switch to Pacific time when they get to the Bay Area – as most travelers do. Unlike last season when the Jets visited San Diego and coach Rex Ryan kept the team’s schedule based on East Coast time. That was a problem for Geno Smith, who was apparently confused by the time change and missed a team meeting the night before the game. Coach Todd Bowles is taking some heat for his clock management on the field, but at least he knows to set his watch back three hours on this road trip. But on Saturday night, the resumption of Standard Time resumes and the clocks are turned back one hour. The Jets might need to hire a time consultant to address that issue.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The Raiders are an improved club and they have beaten up on some bad defensive teams, putting up 37 on both Baltimore and San Diego. But they have struggled against some of the better defenses as Cincinnati and Denver both throttled them. Now Oakland has to face maybe the best defense in the league. New York’s defensive line is strong and the secondary is perhaps the best with Revis and Antonio Cromartie at the corners. The Jets will slow Oakland’s run game and if Carr is forced to throw the ball, the Raiders’ offense just isn’t as effective. Watch for New York to force and take advantage of Oakland turnovers, turning them into short fields and allowing the Jets offense to navigate fewer yards. Ryan Fitzpatrick has already beaten the Raiders while a starter with Buffalo, Tennessee and Houston and will become the first quarterback to beat them with four organizations.
