Dallas finished last season with a 13-3 record and returned almost every key player of note from that team. The Cowboys are 1-1 on the season heading into a “Monday Night Football” matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Some are questioning whether Dallas can be a dominant team after it was blown out on the road by the Denver Broncos in Week 2.
Watch this regular season Week 4 matchup live on Sunday, October 1, 2017, at 1 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium.
Odds Analysis
There won’t be a spread on this one until the Cowboys play on Monday night. Even if they play poorly, though, Dallas will almost certainly be the favorite provided quarterback Dak Prescott doesn’t get hurt.
The Rams have played well early on but their wins are against the Colts and 49ers, a pair of teams struggling currently. The scoring total may be lower than the normal NFL game, but it shouldn’t be too far down based on the play of the Rams’ offense and the potential of Dallas’.
Injury Report
Sammy Watkins – The Rams wide receiver suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of the team’s win over the 49ers last Thursday and did not return to the game. Despite the early exit, Watkins finished with six catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns against San Francisco.
Tavon Austin – Austin also suffered a concussion last week against the 49ers just like his Rams teammate and fellow receiver. Austin also left the game in the fourth quarter. Both players have been placed in concussion protocol, but with the longer week from the Thursday game, could be ready to play by this Sunday.
Nolan Carroll – The Cowboys cornerback also suffered a concussion, leaving the Cowboys game against the Broncos on September 17. He will not play in Monday’s game against the Cardinals. It is unclear how long he will be out.
Player To Watch
Jared Goff -- The former No. 1 overall pick looked lost last year as a rookie but has really turned it around in the earlygoing. It helps having a coach like McVay, who has a great grasp on play-calling and is putting his young quarterback in great position to succeed.
Goff enters this game with 817 passing yards, five touchdowns and just one interception for a quarterback rating of 118.2. He is getting a lot of help from running back Todd Gurley, who is forcing teams to stack the box because of his ability.
Goff’s ceiling will be limited of those receivers can’t play, and this road test will be the toughest of the year to date. If he has a big game, it may prove that Goff has turned the corner and is on his way to becoming the franchise signal-caller the team expected when it moved up in the draft to take him in 2016.
Free ATS Pick
The Rams are playing well but they are going to learn that they aren’t quite playoff material yet. The Cowboys are a much more well-rounded team and they have the home field advantage in this one.
Los Angeles is building something promising with a talented young core on both sides of the ball, but there will be hiccups during the transformation, and this will be one of them. Expect the Cowboys’ offense to shine behind Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver Dez Bryant.
Choose Dallas to win, and it could cover depending on what the spread checks in at for this matchup.
NFL Odds: Cowboys 27, Rams 17
