NFL ATS Picks - New England Patriots at New York Jets Game Preview

Patriots-at-Jets-(CBS)

New England has to play this one on the road but has the huge talent advantage and shouldn’t have much trouble. The oddsmakers aren’t paying any attention to the records as the Jets are a big-time underdog even though both teams are 3-2 on the season.

Watch this regular season Week 6 matchup live on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at 1 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium.

Odds Analysis

The Patriots are big road favorites and more than 63 percent of the action is on them to cover. New England is 2-3 against the spread this season while the Jets are 3-2.

The scoring total is lower than most Patriots games because the Jets may not score a ton of points. The “under” is the more popular wager thus far, with more than 65 percent of the action expecting a lower-scoring game than projected.

Injury Report

Rob Gronkowski — The Patriots’ star tight end missed last Thursday’s game with a thigh injury. Dwayne Allen played the majority of the game in his place but was not a big part of the offense. Gronkowski is the best tight end in football when healthy. He is a ferocious blocker and has 20 catches for 318 yards and two touchdowns in four games this season. The long layoff should help, but keep a close eye on his availability.

Matt Forte—New York’s running back missed his second straight game this weekend as he is still dealing with turf toe. Forte, 31, injured his toe in Week 3 and has yet to attend a full practice since. The two-time Pro Bowler has 23 carries for 94 yards in three games this season.

Bilal Powell — The Jets other running back left the Sunday’s win over the Browns in the first half with a calf injury and did not return. Powell will have to undergo testing to examine the extent of the injury. If Powell is not available for Sunday’s game against the Patriots, rookie Elijah McGuire is expected to shoulder the bulk of the carries for New York.

Matchup to Watch

Jets running game vs. Patriots defense — New England has lost twice this year mostly because its defense has been missing in action. The Patriots are allowing 28.4 points per game, which is 30th in the NFL. They are last in total defense even after a bounceback performance last time out in a win over the Buccaneers.

The Jets do not have a good passing game so their best chance will be running the ball well. Powell is the key to that so the hope is that he can participate in this one. He has 51 carries this season for 240 yards and two touchdowns despite barely playing last time out.

The Jets cannot afford to be merely good in this area, because the Patriots can still overcome that to win. New York must be nothing short of dominant because New England’s offense will almost assuredly put up a boatload of points.

Free ATS Pick

Some might call this a trap game for the Patriots on the road, but they are going to take it seriously. New England has yet to hit on all cylinders this season and wants to start revving it up. That will happen in this one.

The Jets have been surprisingly competitive in some of their contests this year but won’t be able to keep up in this one against a superior opponent. Take the Patriots to cruise to the win, covering the spread easily. The “over” is the choice because the New England offense is going to score at will.

NFL Odds: Patriots 37, Jets 14
