The Dallas Cowboys were one of the best teams in the NFL a season ago, riding the surprising play of Dak Prescott and the immediate stardom of Ezekiel Elliott to double digit wins. Many are expecting regression in 2017, while the New York Giants hope to surpass them and win the NFC East.
The teams will face off in Week 1 of the regular season, and while it’s early, this game could have large ramifications down the road, especially if tiebreakers are involved in playoff hopes. The Cowboys are slight home favorites, but the Giants have a strong defense and an offense that could be better.
This game should give an early indication of which team has the early leg up in the race for divisional supremacy.

New York Giants +4
Dallas Cowboys -4
Over/Under 47
Odds Analysis
The Giants are the underdogs but the betting public really likes this line for them, as nearly 80 percent of the action thus far has chosen New York to cover. There is also a pretty clear choice on the scoring total, with the “under” getting about two-thirds of the money.
The Giants are listed at +166 on the moneyline, with about 82 percent of the wagers choosing them straight up. The Cowboys pay out at -195 on the moneyline.
Injury Report
Odell Beckham Jr. - The Giants star receiver suffered an ankle injury during Week 2 of the preseason and is currently listed as questionable. It’s unclear whether he will play in this Sunday’s season opener against the Cowboys, but he did return to field this week to stretch and move around. He did not participate in practice but did some individual drills, per reports. Beckham was the team’s leading receiver last season with 1,367 yards and should be in line for another big year whenever he gets on the field.
Ezekiel Elliott - The Cowboys’ running back recently had his six-game suspension uphold, but he will be allowed to play against the Giants as it continues its way through the courts. Elliott’s presence is huge in this one as the Cowboys would be favored by even less without him. The Giants have a strong defense, but if Zeke can consistently churn out yardage it will give his team a good chance at taking care of business
Revenge Angle
The Cowboys only lost three games in the regular season in 2016, and two of them came to the Giants. New York won the opener between these teams by a score of 20-19, and then finished off the season sweep with a 10-7 victory on December 11.
It is the second straight season these teams are opening the year in Dallas. With Elliott’s expected suspension coming down at some point this year, the Cowboys need to do well when he is in the lineup.
This will be one of the toughest games on the schedule for Dallas, but there will be no shortage of motivation as it wants to atone for the two blemishes in 2016 while starting quickly as they aim to defend the NFC East crown.
Free ATS Pick
Dak Prescott had a phenomenal season as a rookie in 2016, but he may take a step back as everything went perfectly for him and Dallas a year ago. The Giants have a great defense and the addition of Brandon Marshall is key for the passing game.
OBJ’s presence in this one is huge. If he can’t go, the Cowboys could squeak out a win. However, if he plays, Beckham should star in the upset. Either way, the Giants are the choice to cover the spread.
NFL Odds: Giants 24, Cowboys 22
