NFL ATS Picks - New York Jets at Cleveland Browns Game Preview

Jets-at-Browns-(FOX)

Cleveland was a fellow expected cellar dweller and has lived down to those expectations with a winless record through four games. The Browns were blown out by the Bengals last time out but will be favored in their home game in this one as they look to finally pick up a win.

The Jets are certainly capable of winning this game, which would surprise a bunch of people to see them get over .500 on the year. However, they will still be underdogs as Cleveland’s home field advantage is key.

Kickoff for this regular season Week 5 game is set for Sunday, October 8, 2017, at 1 p.m. ET at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Odds Analysis

The Browns are favored in this matchup, which is a rarity, but more than 55 percent of the money is on them to cover. The spread is enticing as a win by a field goal margin would result in a cover for the Browns.

The scoring total is low as both teams’ defenses are ahead of the offenses, and points could be at a premium in this matchup. The “under” is the more popular pick as more than 80 percent of the money is on it in what is expected to be a slugfest.

Injury Report

Myles Garrett — The No. 1 overall pick sprained his ankle in the preseason and has yet to play this season, but that’s expected to change in this one. If the Browns can get Garrett in the fold against the Jets, he could be an instant difference-maker off the edge. Garrett has the talent to be a big-time sack master in the NFL and wants to get off to a fast start if he plays in this one.

Danny Shelton -- The Browns’ mammoth defensive tackle missed Week 4 with a calf injury after being listed as questionable. The injury is bothersome and it remains to be seen if he can return for this game against the Jets. He is a key piece against the run, so keep an eye on his availability.

Key Stat

255. That’s how many rushing yards the Jets had in Week 4 against the Jaguars. The Jets had 471 total yards in the 23-20 overtime win.

Bilal Powell shouldered the bulk of the workload out of the backfield, finishing with 21 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown, including a long of 75 yards. Elijah McGuire carried the ball 10 times for 93 yards and touchdown. If the Jets can come close to that type of efficiency on the ground again they will be in great shape, but it could be tough.

Free ATS Pick

This one is probably going to be ugly. The offenses aren’t very good, featuring a rookie quarterback for the Browns in DeShone Kizer and a veteran journeyman for the Jets in Josh McCown. Cleveland has some young talent but is still in the midst of a rebuild and doesn’t have much to show for it.

There is too much unknown to have a grasp on which team will win for sure, but the presence of McCown is key. He should be able to make some plays against an inexperienced secondary to help lead his team to a road win.

The Browns are favored by a slim margin but it feels like that spread, even against the Jets, is too much. New York on the moneyline is a good bet, with the “over” the right call on the scoring total as there could be some turnovers which lead to short fields.

NFL Odds: Jets 23, Browns 17
