NFL ATS Picks - Tennessee Titans at San Francisco 49ers Game Preview

Titans-at-49ers-(CBS)

The Jimmy Garoppolo era is off to a roaring start. The San Francisco 49ers only have three wins on the season but are 2-0 since the quarterback took over and will aim to keep it rolling next time out. The Tennessee Titans are 8-5 on the season but are actually the underdogs when they head to San Francisco for this Week 15 matchup.

San Francisco has found a groove but this game is against a tougher opponent than either the Bears or the Texans, the teams the 49ers have beaten previously. Tennessee is currently in line for a playoff spot in the AFC but there are plenty of teams on its tail so this is a critical matchup.

Watch this regular season Week 15 matchup live on Sunday, December 17, 2017, at 4:25 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium.

Odds Analysis

It’s a little weird to see a 3-10 team favored over one that is 8-5, but that’s the case in this one. The betting public is buying in, as more than 53 percent of the action is on the 49ers to cover this spread.

The scoring total is middle of the road, and the “under” has gotten the vast majority of the action early on. It makes sense, as Tennessee is better on defense than offense and this one could be a low-scoring contest.

Injury Report

Taylor Lewan — The Titans left tackle exited Sunday’s game against the Cardinals during the first half with a back injury and did not return. He had an MRI this week which showed that the injury was not serious, but he was missing at practice on Wednesday. Lewan is expected to play in this matchup, which is important because he is a Pro Bowl talent on the blind-side.

Marcus Mariota — Tennessee's quarterback suffered a knee injury in the game against Arizona, but remained in the game. The injury is considered minor and he participated in a full practice Wednesday. Mariota played very poorly against the Cardinals and needs to pick it up if his team plans on winning this contest.

Derrick Morgan — The Titans linebacker missed Sunday’s game against the Cardinals with a knee injury and was limited in practice this week. If Morgan is unable to play again this weekend against the 49ers, Erik Walden and Kevin Dodd would likely be used to fill in.

Player To Watch

Garoppolo — The 49ers acquired the signal-caller near the trading deadline from the Patriots for a second-round pick. He sat for a few weeks while still learning the playbook, but has been impressive since taking over.

Garoppolo has completed 48-of-72 passes this season for 645 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He threw for 334 yards with a score last time out against the Texans, setting a career-high in passing yardages.

Garoppolo still doesn’t have very many games under his belt, but continues to impress. San Francisco seems likely to sign him to a lucrative extension if Garoppolo continues to play well down the stretch.

Free ATS Pick

The 49ers are certainly improved with Garoppolo at the helm, but this is too much of an over-correction. The Titans aren’t a great team but they are decent, while the 49ers are still in rebuild mode. This one should definitely be close, but the 49ers shouldn’t be the favorites.

Choose the Titans to win this game on the road to keep pace in the AFC race. San Francisco is looking better but is still not as talented as its foe. Tennessee has a good defense and Garoppolo might face his first adversity as a starting quarterback in the NFL. The “under” is the easy call on the scoring total.

NFL Odds: Titans 24, 49ers 16
