NFL Betting Online: The New York Jets needed a win in the final game of the 2015 regular season to qualify for the playoffs but couldn’t get done. They are expected to be in the playoff mix once again in 2016, although oddsmakers aren’t too optimistic about their chances. With a quarterback situation in flux, it’s tough to know how well the Jets will play this season. They are +200 underdogs to make it to the playoffs, with missing the postseason the favored wager, set at -260 in NFL betting.
The Jets finished last season with a record of 10-6 but just missed out on the playoffs. Their defense was impressive, giving up an average of 19.6 points per game, which was ninth in the NFL. The Jets’ defensive line was very good a season ago and should once again be the strength of the unit. Muhammad Wilkerson had 12 sacks in 2015 and just agreed to a contract extension with the team. Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams are a pair of other key players on the line, while Darrelle Revis remains one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and will lead the secondary.
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 3,905 yards and 31 touchdowns a season ago with 15 interceptions. However, he still isn’t signed, although many expect the team and Fitzpatrick to agree to terms at some point. If not, Geno Smith could be the starter, and that would decrease the team’s odds at making the playoffs since he is not as proven as Fitzpatrick. The Jets return their top two leading receiver. Brandon Marshall had 109 catches for 1,502 yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago, while Eric Decker added 80 catches for 1,027 yards and 12 scores. Chris Ivory was the Jets’ leading rusher a season ago but he has departed and will be replaced by former Bears standout Matt Forte. Ivory may be a better rusher at this point in his career but Forte is a very good receiver out of the backfield.
The Jets are a solid team with a good passing game and an impressive defense. They were on the precipice of making the postseason in 2015 but fell just short by losing to the Bills in the regular season finale. Even though much of the team returns, the odds are against the Jets getting over the hump and making the postseason this year. However, those should improve if Fitzpatrick is signed and added to the fold. The Jets are in the same division as the New England Patriots so it won’t be easy to win the AFC East, so the most realistic path to the playoffs would be a wild card berth. The Jets are listed at +200 to clinch one of those spots in NFL betting.
