If you had to pick an offseason winner, it would be the New York Jets. The organization drastically turned its fortunes around – at least on paper – with a fantastic free agency period followed by a great draft.
Moving on from the Rex Ryan experience, the Jets hired Todd Bowles, formerly the Cardinals defensive coordinator, as their new head coach. Bowles did a nice job with Arizona’s defense and has more pieces to work with now.
The Jets completely overhauled their secondary, reuniting star cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, a duo that’s been successful in the past and should still give opposing quarterbacks fits.
If that weren’t enough, the defensive line is just nasty. Already a quality group before the draft, the big boys up front got a boost with first-round pick Leonard Williams, who fell into their lap at No. 6 and has Pro-Bowl written all over him.
That pick turned out to be a good move after Pro-Bowl defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson got popped for a positive marijuana test and will miss the team’s first four games after getting suspended by the league.
Still, the unit has the potential to be the best in the league and will keep the Jets in all of their games while the offense tries to figure things out.
The Jets didn’t lose a lot of production from a year ago. The biggest departure was probably safety Dawan Landry. Other than that, the Jets remain intact for the new season.
Just like the Buffalo Bills, the quarterback position is the Jets’ Achilles heel. Former first-round draftee Geno Smith and veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will battle for the starting spot. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall signed in free agency to give them a solid number one option. But defense will have to carry them until the quarterback play is solidified.
The Jets have a great defense that’s going to keep them in games and an offense that has potential at the skill positions. The problem with the Jets is at quarterback, as Smith hasn’t proven he’s the guy and Fitzpatrick has bounced around for a reason. Their playoff hopes all come down to what they can get out of the quarterback position.
KEY ADDITIONS: WR Brandon Marshall, CB Darrelle Revis, RB Stevan Ridley, CB Antonio Cromartie, OB James Carpenter, S Marcus Gilchrist, CB Buster Skrine, LB Erin Henderson, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.
KEY LOSSES: WR Percy Harvin, DT Kenrick Ellis, CB/KR Kyle Wilson.
For the first time in a few years the Jets appear to have a definitive plan that involves the entire organization. They last captured the AFC East in 2002 and figure to have a strong showing this season. But the AFC is just too competitive and the Jets won’t be in the playoffs this year.
