Head coach Jay Gruden and quarterback Robert Griffin III had their share of run-ins over the last year but let’s be real, RG3’s knee injury in 2012 really hampered him. He hasn’t been the same since and the ‘Skins fell to the bottom of the standings in the last two seasons.

It’s obvious Griffin’s knee injury has taken a toll and he’s not the dynamic dual-threat quarterback he was during his 2012 rookie season. But RG3 can still fit the mold of a pass-first player and a smart runner, similar to the new-wave of QBs we’ve seen like Russell Wilson and Cam Newton.

The Redskins have plenty of talent on offense with several capable targets for whoever starts the season at quarterback. DeSean Jackson didn’t have his best season during his first year in D.C. in 2014, but he remains a big-play threat and quieted his off-field antics from years past. Pierre Garcon is reliable as a No. 2 receiver and Jordan Reed is poised to be the next great tight end in the NFC.

By hiring offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who helped make Dallas the NFL’s top rushing offense in 2014, and using three of their first five draft choices on running back Matt Jones, tackle Brandon Scherff and guard Arie Kouandjio, the Skins are showing their commitment to a power running game. If effective that will take a load off the shoulders of RG3.

The Redskins didn’t neglect the defensive side of the ball in the offseason, upgrading that area with a new aggressive philosophy. Terrance Knighton is the biggest addition to the line and one of the better nose guards in football. He should help a team that struggled to get to the quarterback last season and will also put the Albert Haynesworth disaster behind them once and for all.

Getting safety Dashon Goldson and cornerback Chris Culliver immediately improves a secondary that was a nightmare last season.

The Redskins flew under the radar this offseason, avoiding flashy big-name players while still upgrading areas of need. The season looks promising with a rebuilt defense and proven offensive starts. If RG3 can stay health and protected while regaining his rookie season form, the ‘Skins have a chance to be a surprise.

KEY ADDITIONS: DT Terrance Knighton, S Dashon Goldson, DL Stephen Paea, CB Chris Culliver, DE Ricky Jean-Francois, S Jeron Johnson

KEY LOSSES: LB Brian Orakpo, RB Roy Helu, S Ryan Clark, DL Stephen Bowen, DT Barry Cofield.

The Redskins are picked to finish last in the NFC East, if you strictly go off of BookMaker’s NFL lines to win the division. We see improvement in D.C. but it won’t add up to playoff contention or escaping the basement in the division.
