NFL Betting Online: The Miami Dolphins will have several new faces in the starting lineup on both sides of the ball, but the oddsmakers don’t believe it will increase the team’s chances of making the postseason. The Dolphins went 6-10 a season ago, and both lost and gained some potential impact starters. When it’s all said and done, Miami is expected to miss the postseason once again. The team’s odds of making it are set at +225, with their chances of missing it set at -285 in NFL odds.
The Dolphins were 3-3 through six weeks a season ago but never reached .500 again as they faltered down the stretch. Joe Philbin was fired after a 1-3 start and Dan Campbell took over as the interim coach the rest of the season. The Dolphins hired Adam Gase in the offseason and he hopes to lead the team to a better record in 2016. Miami finished with an average of 19.4 points per game last season, which was one of the worst marks in the league.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw for 4,208 yards passing with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and hopes to make more progress heading into 2016. Jarvis Landry is the team’s top receiver, but the running game will have a new look after Lamar Miller departed in free agency. Jay Ajayi is expected to get the bulk of the carries, at least early on, unless another running back beats him out for the starting gig.
The Dolphins lost star pass-rusher Olivier Vernon to the Giants in free agency, but did sign Mario Williams. Williams is a former star who had a down season last year with the Bills, but has the potential to be a difference-maker. Cameron Wake is aiming to come back strong after getting hurt last season, and much of the team’s defensive fortunes could come down to how well Williams and Wake perform in the pass-rushing department.
The Dolphins also added linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Byron Maxwell in an offseason trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, so the defense will look much different from a year ago. The group needs to perform well, because Tannehill has never proven himself as an upper-tier quarterback, and therefore the offense may remain below average.
Miami has a lot of new faces in the mix, but the losses of Miller and Vernon were big ones. For a team that went 6-10 a season ago, it’s asking a lot for a big turnaround. Tannehill needs to have a breakout year if the Dolphins have any chance of qualifying for the postseason in 2016. The oddsmakers don’t see it happening, as the odds are pretty long to see them
