BookMaker Sportsbook offers multiple types of futures wagering for myriad sports. These bets have a long-term settle date. You can gamble on team win totals, the AFC East Division winner, the American Football Conference winner, and of course the Super Bowl 50 winner.
Payouts for futures bets are usually better than even, or greater than +100, so the amount staked is much less than the potential payout. Of course, the inherent risk of futures betting is the unknown of the future.
BookMaker posts adjusted futures odds on team win totals, to win the AFC East Division, AFC and NFC, and Super Bowl 50 every day of the season.
AFC EAST
The AFC East still belongs to the New England Patriots. The gap is closing and their run will end sometime, but as long as Tom Brady is calling the shots, the Pats should be considered Super Bowl contenders. New England will deal with Brady’s suspension from the Deflategate fiasco, be it four games or fewer, and will probably be a better team because of it. That’s just how things go for the Pats. The Miami Dolphins made a big splash in the free agent market signing Ndamukong Suh, but had to shed some talent to make room for their big prize. The Buffalo Bills hired new head coach Rex Ryan, who is serious about ending the team’s playoff drought. An uncertain quarterback situation, however, leaves them scrambling to make the postseason. The Jets are in a situation similar to that of Buffalo. They have a new head coach in Todd Bowles and questions regarding the most important position on the field. Geno Smith gets a chance to prove he’s the guy, but even with an improved defense, the Jets miss out again.
Here is a team by team breakdown with odds to win the division and victory total.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS +173 – Wins O/U: 10
The defending champion Patriots have proven for a decade and a half that this is an organization that can’t be counted out. They won’t be fazed by the lingering suspension of Tom Brady and will cruise to another division title, though it won’t be as easy as it has been. They have an unfavorable schedule with a bye in Week 3 and a pair of division road games to end the season. But the Patriots are pretty much what they’ve been over the years, a very talented team with great coaching and one of the best quarterbacks ever. Nothing is going to change this year.
Sure, Brady missing a few games could lead to a rocky start, but this is still a team that should win double-digit games and make the playoffs once again. The Patriots are still the team to beat in the AFC East and will always be a threat come playoff time with No. 12 leading the way. And remember, this was a team that opened 2-2 one year ago and still walked away with the Lombardi Trophy.
Prediction: 11-5
MIAMI DOLPHINS +352 – Wins O/U: 9
The Dolphins won the biggest prize in free agency when they signed Ndamukong Suh to the richest contract in NFL history for a defensive player. If he keeps his head straight and stays on the field, Miami’s defensive line is going to be a nightmare for opposing offenses for the foreseeable future. Miami may have the best chance of any team in the AFC East to dethrone New England and win the division. Reason being, they have their franchise quarterback in place. And for now the Jets and Bills still have questions.
On paper, the Dolphins could have their best season since reaching the playoffs seven seasons ago. But Suh is not a savior, Joe Philbin is not about to become a coaching savant, and Miami’s long run of mediocrity could just as easily continue. There’s an unmistakable make-or-break vibe in Miami this year, and when does that kind of backdrop ever seem to pay off in a big way?
Prediction: 9-7
BUFFALO BILLS +467 – Wins O/U: 8.5
There must be a new season on the horizon because once again the Buffalo Bills have a new head coach. Rex Ryan takes over in upstate New York after the surprising opt out of Doug Marrone after a 9-7 run in 2014. Ryan inherits a defense that is loaded with talent especially along the defensive line where Mario Williams and Marcel Dareus wreak havoc. Ryan is a defensive guru and should have the Bills’ defense ranked as one of the best in 2015.
The new-look Bills will face a tall task early in the season when the host the Cots and Patriots to kick off their 2015 season. If they can weather the early storm and a late-season stretch of five road games in six weeks, they have a chance of making the playoffs. The Bills already had an elite defense, but they made enough moves on the offensive side for this to be a playoff-contending team. However, the Bills need to get something out of the quarterback position if this is really going to be the first time Buffalo makes the playoffs in over a decade.
Prediction: 9-7
NEW YORK JETS +795 – Wins O/U: 7.5
Moving on from the Rex Ryan experience, the Jets hired Todd Bowles, formerly the Cardinals defensive coordinator, as their new head coach. Bowles did a nice job with Arizona’s defense and has more pieces to work with now. The Jets completely overhauled their secondary, reuniting star cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, a duo that’s been successful in the past and should still give opposing quarterbacks fits.
If you had to pick an offseason winner, it would be the Jets. The organization drastically turned its fortunes around – at least on paper – with a fantastic free agency period followed by a great draft. Their outstanding defense will keep them in games but the Jets’ problem is at quarterback. Geno Smith hasn’t proven he’s the guy and Ryan Fitzpatrick has bounced around for a reason. The offense has potential at the skill positions, but their playoff hopes all come down to what they can get out of the quarterback position.
Prediction: 7-9
