Payouts for futures bets are usually better than even, or greater than +100, so the amount staked is much less than the potential payout. Of course, the inherent risk of futures betting is the unknown of the future. BookMaker posts adjusted futures odds to win Super Bowl 50 every day.
The 12 best teams in the NFL, or in a few cases teams that survived a weak division, are competing for the league's top prize - the Lombardi Trophy - which will be fought for on February 7. It's the National Football Conference's trophy to be had this season, according to BookMaker, with three of the top four favorites residing in the NFC.
Five of the 12 playoff qualifiers are searching for their first Super Bowl win and one - the Houston Texans - have never been in the championship game. New England and Pittsburgh can break a tie with Dallas for most appearances in a Super Bowl and Denver can tie those three teams with its eighth trip to the Super Bowl.
The New England Patriots are the AFC favorite at +380 to become the first repeat champions since they did it in 2004 and 2005. The overall favorite according to BookMaker at +377 is the Arizona Cardinals, who earned a bye through the Wild Card round with a franchise-best 13-3 record but were humbled by Seattle in the regular season finale. The Carolina Panthers fought for perfection until Week 16 of the regular season and are +420 after going 15-1.
ODDS TO WIN SUPERBOWL 50
Arizona Cardinals +377
New England Patriots +380
Carolina Panthers +420
Seattle Seahawks +595
Denver Broncos +646
Pittsburgh Steelers +1016
Kansas City Chiefs +1786
Cincinnati Bengals +2325
Green Bay Packers +2599
Minnesota Vikings +3409
Washington Redskins +4736
Houston Texans +6507
After nearly completing a perfect regular season, the NFC South champion Panthers still get no respect. Carolina won 14 straight games to start the year, finished 15-1 and earned the top seed in the NFC to be positioned just above the No. 6 seed Seahawks as a Super Bowl favorite.
Led by the NFL's likely MVP, quarterback Cam Newton, and an underrated but maniacal defense, the Panthers rolled through the NFC. Their only regular season loss in Week 16 to Atlanta may have been a good thing, as several members of the club mentioned the thought of a perfect season was weighing on them.
Arizona looked like the best team in the NFL up until the final game of the regular season when the Cardinals got worked by Seattle. Don't read too much into it, though. The Seahawks were looking for some momentum after a home loss to St. Louis the previous week and Arizona already had a first-round bye wrapped up.
And speaking of Seattle, they are a big favorite as a No. 6 seed in the NFC. The Seahawks will be bolstered by the expected return of running back Marshawn Lynch to the lineup. Lynch missed several games after undergoing abdominal surgery and the offense blossomed with a new-found passing game led by Russell Wilson and Doug Baldwin.
The Seahawks are at +595 for a reason - they've been here before. The last two years to be exact. And the crushing defeat to New England in Super Bowl XLIX is motivation for this group to get back.
The AFC lacks a clear-cut favorite. Sure New England is +380 to win another Super Bowl, but the team is a big question mark. Injuries took a toll on the Pats during the regular season and Tom Brady looked human down the stretch. But with a first-round bye to get some bodies back and with the best quarterback-coach tandem in the league, you just can't count them out.
With two weeks left in the regular season, there was a possibility the Denver Broncos wouldn't even make the playoffs. Once the dust settled, they were the unlikely No. 1 seed in the AFC. They have the best defense in football, but Denver's quarterback situation is unsettled and they are beatable at home.
If you're looking for a longshot to wager on, consider the Kansas City Chiefs, who rattled off 10 straight wins to close the regular season, overcoming a 1-5 start to qualify for the tournament. The Chiefs played playoff football the entire second half of the season and did quite well. They are well-coached, have a stingy defense, an efficient offense and they don't hurt themselves with turnovers or stupid penalties. All are qualities that make for a playoff winning team.
