The Buffalo Bills don’t want to admit it, but this is a rebuilding season. Buffalo dealt two of its best players for a lesser talent and a draft choice on August 11. In the first deal, the Bills sent Sammy Watkins and a sixth-round pick in 2018 to the Rams for cornerback EJ Gaines and a second-round pick in 2018. A few minutes later, they dealt Ronald Darby to the Eagles for wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round pick in 2018. GM Brandon Beane stated that the team hadn’t given up on the season and pointed to the signing of Anquan Boldin as a sign that the Bills were serious about competing in 2018, but Boldin retired on Sunday. This team has a clear eye on the future, which is a shame because it can win now in this division.

Key Factors For Winning the Super Bowl
LeSean McCoy – Buffalo lost McCoy’s primary backup Mike Gillislee in free agency to the Patriots and now will rely more heavily on McCoy to keep the ground game churning. Buffalo had one of the best running games in the league last season with both McCoy and Gillislee averaging over five yards per carry behind this offensive line. The Bills don’t have a proven runner behind McCoy this season and that means Shady will have to carry the load. He averaged just 16 carries a game in 2016, but will need to run the ball over 20 times a game for Buffalo to win this year.
A great rookie season from Zay Jones – Jones smashed NCAA records at East Carolina in an offense that was designed to throw to him as many times as possible. Buffalo drafted him in the second round of this year’s draft and now the onus is on him to immediately be a playmaker. Jones has a great set of hands and isn’t afraid to run crossing routes in the middle of the field. He is a natural fit in the slot, but might be moved to one of the outside positions as this position group is pretty barren now.
Tyrod Taylor continuing to play well – Taylor is never going to be considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but is a solid option and you can win games with him. He threw for over 3,000 yards while only throwing six interceptions in 2016 and averaged over six yards per carry on the ground. Opposing teams have trouble with his mobility and he can make plays and find open receivers when things collapse around him. His offensive line is good and keeps him upright, but now he will have a whole new set of receivers and must quickly build rapport with them.
The secondary – The trade of Darby makes it likely that the Bills will have four entirely new faces starting in the secondary this year. Safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer were signed in free agency, while Gaines was picked up from the Rams and Tre’Davious White was the team’s first-round pick. The chemistry of White and Gaines is especially important. Although two of the teams in their division don’t have much of a passing game, this duo will have to be great if they stand any chance of beating the Pats.
