There must be a new season on the horizon because once again the Buffalo Bills have a new head coach. Rex Ryan takes over in upstate New York after the surprising opt out of Doug Marrone after a 9-7 run in 2014.

Ryan is no stranger to the AFC East after spending the last six seasons directing the New York Jets. He now hopes to lead his new team to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

He inherits a defense that is loaded with talent especially along the defensive line where Mario Williams and Marcel Dareus wreak havoc. Ryan is a defensive guru and should have the Bills’ defense ranked as one of the best in 2015.

Improving the offense was the name of the game this offseason in Buffalo and the Bills certainly seem to have accomplished that. Some fire power was added with the addition of wide receiver Percy Harvin and running back LeSean McCoy. Tight end Charles Clay and even quarterback Matt Cassel all represent big upgrades at their respective positions.

It’s time for quarterback E.J. Manuel, who’s played in just 15 games in two seasons, to put-up or shut-up. The Bills obtained the veteran Cassel from Minnesota as well as free agent signee Tyrod Taylor to push Manuel either into or out of the starting role.

The Bills loaded up with Florida State players, as they drafted Ronald Darby, Karlos Williams and Nick O'Leary within the first six rounds. Darby is going to be a starting cornerback sooner than later, and Williams could be a steal in the fifth round. Linebacker Tony Steward has a chance to become a solid backup linebacker and could also develop into an even better special teams player.

The 2015 offseason has had a different feel to it so far, despite the recent testosterone-induced antics of offensive line coach Aaron Kromer.

The Bills already had an elite defense, but they made enough moves on the offensive side for this to be a possible playoff team. However, the Bills need to get something out of the quarterback position if this is really going to be the first time Buffalo makes the playoffs in over a decade.

KEY ADDITIONS: RB LeSean McCoy, QB Matt Cassel, TE Charles Clay, WR Percy Harvin, QB Tyrod Taylor.

KEY LOSSES: LB Kiko Alonso, TE Scott Chandler, RB C.J. Spiller, S Da’Norris Searcy, LB Brandon Spikes, OG Erik Pears, QB Kyle Orton.

Whether it’s Cassel or Manuel, somebody has to step up and make plays. Quarterback play will decide if the Bills are truly ready for that next step.
