NFL Betting Online: The defending champion Denver Broncos bring back a good chunk of the team’s star-studded defense this season but will need to find a new identity on offense with a new quarterback at the helm. The Broncos have -150 odds to make the playoffs and +125 odds to miss the playoffs in NFL gambling.
Denver finished the regular season at 12-4 last season, winning its final two games of the season against Cincinnati and San Diego to arrive in the playoffs. From there, the Broncos defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Divisional Round and knocked off defending champion New England Patriots 20-18 in the AFC Conference Championship Game to arrive in the Super Bowl against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Behind a spectacular defense that allowed just a single touchdown all game, Denver defeated Carolina 24-10 to win the Broncos’ third Super Bowl. The Broncos accumulated just 194 total yards in the contest, the lowest ever by a winning offense in the Super Bowl.
Peyton Manning, in his 18th season in the league last year, finished his fourth season as Denver’s starting quarterback with 2,249 yards, nine touchdowns and 17 interceptions. The 39-year-old was noticeably declining in 2015 and there was talk all season long about his pending retirement. He battled injury last year and even briefly lost his starting job to backup quarterback Brock Osweiler but ultimately finished the year where he started - as the team’s go-to guy behind center. The good news for the veteran, is that the defense was so good he didn’t have to do much. The Broncos ranked fourth in the league on defense for points allowed, giving up just 18.5 points a game. The offense was 19th in the league for points scored, averaging just 22.2 points.
In the offseason, Manning announced his retirement and Osweiler left for the Houston Texans, leaving Denver without a starting quarterback. The Broncos acquired veteran journeyman Mark Sanchez in a trade with the Eagles in March. The 29-year-old is expected to start at quarterback in 2016. He will have the luxury of teaming up with a stud wide receiver in Demaryius Thomas. Thomas led the team in receiving last season with 105 receptions for 1,304 yards and six touchdowns.
The defense takes a couple of hits, losing star defensive tackle Malik Jackson to the Jaguars and linebacker Danny Trevathan to Bears, but return the bulk of its talent including outside linebackers Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware and cornerbacks Chris Harris and Aqib Talib. The Broncos should possess one of the league's best defenses again this season with this much talent returning to the front seven and secondary. But, can Denver ride its defense all the way to the postseason again in 2016? That’s the question Broncos fans face this season in NFL odds.
