It’s been three years and counting since the City of Brotherly Love got to take in some playoff football. The cupboard has been bare for quite some time, but the team showed some grit last season by winning seven games and splitting all 16 played games against the spread. Believe it or not, the Eagles are in the conversation to win a division ( +255 ) most believe is either the Cowboys or Giants to take. There’s also been some buyback on the Super Bowl LII futures market with Philly currently sitting as +3619 underdogs after opening at +4500. The team definitely made moves in the offseason to make some noise, but was it really enough to win it all?

Key Factors For Winning the Super Bowl

Carson Wentz Must Take the Next Step – Wentz entered the NFL with the pedigree of a champion after guiding North Dakota State to a number of NCAA Division I Football Championships. The kid looked like he would light the league on fire through his first three games leading Philly to a perfect 3-0 record while amassing five touchdown passes and no interceptions. It was a learning experience the rest of the way with the first year quarterback finishing up with a 16:14 TD/INT ratio and 79.3 QB rating. It wasn’t all his fault however with the wide receiving corps lacking to say the least. Upper management went out and brought him in some new toys to play with this season, so the hope is that his offseason training regimen and better knowledge of the game will see him mature as a QB1. If not, Philadelphia will have no shot of hanging tough with the Cowboys, Giants or Redskins for that matter.

Someone Needs to Step Up in the Passing Game – I alluded to this earlier, but Wentz had nobody to get the ball to through the air last season. He lacked a true WR1 or deep ball threat. Both of those issues were rectified this past offseason when Philly went out and signed both Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. While the former is a major injury concern, when healthy, he ranks out amongst the best wide receivers in the game. The latter offers up nothing but speed, but that’s exactly what the Eagles offense needs to break up the monotony of their plodding offensive attack from a year ago. With newcomer LeGarrette Blount likely to force opposing defenses to account for him, the pieces are in place for the Eagles to dramatically improve upon last year’s offensive output.

The Defensive Line Needs to Dominate – The strength of this defense is without a doubt up front. It was the best aspect of the stop unit a year ago, and figures to be in 2017-18 as well. How could it not be with All-Pro DT Fletcher Cox manning the middle? While the departure of Bennie Logan to the Kansas City Chiefs will no doubt hurt the run defense, the D-Line is still brimming with top end talent and depth. Chris Long was brought in to be a defensive force on early downs. His presence will allow rookie DE Derek Barnett to solely focus on pass rushing downs. The insertion of Timmy Jernigan from the Ravens will only make it that much tougher for opposing offenses to get much done up the middle. Philly’s secondary was gouged deep a year ago, so it will be up to the front wall to apply enough pressure to prevent divisional wide receivers like Odell Beckham Jr., Terrelle Pryor and Dez Bryant from embarrassing them once again.
