NFL GAMES OF THE WEEK

Rams at Seahawks – Thursday, December 15, 8:25 p.m. ET (NBC/NFL Network)

The teams have been vastly different in their performance on the field over the past several seasons. Seattle has appeared in two Super Bowls and reached the playoffs the last four years. The Rams, meanwhile, haven’t played beyond the regular season since 2004. But in 2015, one-third of Seattle’s losses were delivered by the Rams, who surprisingly, swept the season series.

A new home and a new quarterback have the Rams thinking much bigger heading into the season. But what will get the Rams to new heights is their ferocious defense. It’s a group that has given Russell Wilson fits and has the ability chase him down in the open field. The Rams should be better in 2016 and a late-season showdown with Seattle in the Pacific Northwest could have plenty riding on it for L.A. During the last four seasons when the Seahawks have been front-runners in the NFC West, the Rams have the most wins against them than any other club.

Patriots at Broncos – Sunday, December 18, 4:25 p.m. ET (CBS)

These teams met twice last season, with Denver winning both; the first meeting, in November, marked the Patriots’ first loss of the season. The second, in the AFC title game, sent the Broncos to the Super Bowl. Denver looks quite different now, the biggest difference being at quarterback – Peyton Manning retired, Brock Osweiler took Houston’s money and ran, and Colin Kaepernick rightfully told John Elway he wasn’t taking a $5 million pay cut to leave San Francisco. At the moment, Denver is starting its championship defense with Mark Sanchez at quarterback.

This AFC championship rematch offers the Patriots the chance to get some revenge. Over the past few years, the storyline for this matchup has been dominated by the battle between Tom Brady and Manning. The Broncos defense should be one of the top units in the league again this season – despite losing Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan in free agency – and that could cause some headaches for the Patriots. On top of all that, this game could have major playoff implications in the AFC late in the season for both teams.

Steelers at Bengals – Sunday, December 18, 8:30 p.m. ET (NBC)

Linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who is suspended for the first three games of 2016, won't be able to play in the first matchup between these teams in Week 2. He won't be bullied by the Steelers in this budding rivalry. This December game is one of the most anticipated of the season, and it will likely have an impact on the playoff race.

The games between these two teams get fiercer with each new matchup, but this will be on a completely different level after last year’s wild-card slugfest. No game better epitomized the Bengals’ struggle to get over the hump of a playoff win than January’s debacle. Don't forget that the late-season matchup last year was a brutally physical game as well. And with Burfict, Adam Jones, Antonio Brown and Joey Porter on the same field, you know it’s going to be lit.
