It’s still too early to tell what’s what in the National Football League, but Week 3 of the regular season offers some intriguing matchups. Exactly half of the 16 games are within a field goal when the early lines came in, but if you like big dogs, San Francisco is your club. The Niners 14-point spread against Seattle is the largest of any opening line for the entire season.

NFL GAMES OF THE WEEK
Rams at Buccaneers – Sunday, September 25, 4:05 p.m. ET (FOX)
Last year the NFL opened the regular season with a Week 1 game featuring Tampa Bay against Tennessee, which produced a rare matchup of the top two draft picks of 2015 in quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. Tennessee won convincingly in Tampa.
This year we’re in line for a possible showdown of the past two quarterbacks taken No. 1 overall, with Winston facing off against Los Angeles’s Jared Goff. True, we don’t know if the Rams will be playing the rookie at this point, but the way they go through quarterbacks, I’d say it’s a decent bet. Besides, all the draft experts said Goff is the most NFL-ready signal caller.
Vikings at Panthers – Sunday, September 25, 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
The Vikings open their brand new stadium against the Packers in Week 2, then get to travel to the NFC champions for a Week 3 showdown with the Panthers. Both of these defenses were awesome last season and it should be especially interesting to watch Adrian Peterson against Luke Kuechly, Greg Olsen against Minnesota’s athletic linebackers and Cam Newton against the Vikings’ short-yardage run defense.
Under coach Mike Zimmer the Vikings have made strides and last season they were within a chip-shot field goal of advancing past the wild card round of the playoffs for the first time since 2009. They aspire to be what the Panthers are in the NFC and this is their chance to prove how far they’ve come.
Falcons at Saints – Monday, September 26, 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
The NFL’s quietest rivalry resumes in primetime in Week 3. Traditional rivalries remain relevant mainly because of their history. Think Cowboys-Redskins and Packers-Bears. Geographical rivalries are such because of the team’s proximity to each other. Competitive rivalries exist because the games usually have implications for the rest of the league.
But these two adversaries have all three components at the same time. Atlanta and New Orleans played their first game against each other in 1967, and they’ve played each other at least twice a year since 1970. Neither team has played more games against another opponent.
