NFL GAMES OF THE WEEK
Giants at Packers, Sunday, October 9, 8:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
It’s time to see what Ben McAdoo can do, and there is no better place than his old stomping grounds. The new Giants boss is a former Packers quarterbacks coach and he’ll be under some legitimate pressure this season to return New York to relevancy after four consecutive non-playoff seasons.
New York’s revamped defensive line goes up against not only one of the NFL’s better offensive lines, but also possibly its best quarterback. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers has lost three consecutive games to the Giants’ Eli Manning, and you know that has to irk the prideful No. 12. This one will also be in primetime, adding a little more glamour to the proceedings.
Bengals at Cowboys, Sunday, October 9, 4:25 p.m. ET (CBS)
Here’s an interesting question to ask the Cowboys. Was the 4-12 season of last year just a disaster or was the 12-4 season in 2014 a complete fluke? The injury that sidelined quarterback Tony Romo in 2015 points to that season being an aberration. The fact that the 2014 season was Dallas’ only playoff appearance since 2009 points to last year being closer to the norm.
Win or lose, football fans enjoy watching the Cowboys. Six of their matchups in 2016 are in primetime, a rarity for a team that won just four times the season before. This isn’t one of them, but it’s still an early season game against a perennial playoff team that will give us a strong sense of what we can expect from the ‘Boys in 2016.
Chargers at Raiders – Sunday, October 9, 4:25 p.m. ET (CBS)
One of the oldest rivalries in professional football, one that was born in the old American Football League in the early 60’s, could be coming to an end as we know it. Both teams filed paperwork with the NFL office looking to relocate and possibly share a stadium in the Los Angeles area. That didn’t work out, but both teams are still looking.
In the meantime, the first meeting of 2016 takes place in Oakland. The players will try to ignore the relocation issues. Fans have either obsessed over it or gone into denial. They won’t be co-habitants in Carson, but the Raiders have explored a move to Las Vegas while the Chargers becoming roomies with the Rams in LA is still a possibility. Meanwhile, the games go on.
