Two years ago, the Atlanta Falcons got out to a perfect 5-0 start but went on to lose eight of their final 11 games and missed the playoffs. Last season, the Falcons once again got out to a hot start winning four of their first five games, but ended up seeing it all the way through and went on to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Despite the gargantuan choke it executed in Super Bowl LI, Matt Ryan and company are excited to get back on the field and show everyone they still have what it takes to be one of the best teams not only in the division, but in the entire league.

Why the Atlanta Falcons Will Win the NFC South
The Atlanta Falcons marched a historically good offense onto the gridiron last season. Its 34.1 point per game average was tops in the league with the 416.4 total yards per game averaged checking in at No. 2. Opposing defenses were left scratching their head trying to figure out a way to limit what the Falcons wanted to do offensively.
Along with owning the league’s No. 2 ranked passing attack ( 298.9 YPG ), Atlanta complimented it with the league’s No. 5 ranked rushing attack. The good news for Falcons fans and those that buy into them being the odds on favorite to win the division for a second straight season is the fact that all the integral parts of that offensive dynamo return for another run at it in 2017-18.
Devonta Freeman just became one of the highest paid running backs in the league this past offseason, and he’ll have wingman Tevin Coleman back as well to form one of the most explosive duos the league has to offer. If that’s not enough, Julio Jones returns as Ryan’s primary target and he’s backed up by a pair of extremely capable pass catchers in Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel who really turned it on at the end of last season.
Making it all the more exciting for the defending NFC South champs will be a brand new 71,000 seat stadium that the Falcons will be breaking in this season. The Georgia Dome served the team well for the last 27 years, but Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be taking their home field advantage to an entirely new level.
Why the Atlanta Falcons Won't Win the NFC South
The results Kyle Shanahan had calling the plays in Hotlanta the last two seasons earned him an enormous payday on the west coast to become the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He won’t be whispering sweet nothings into Matty Ice’s ear this season. In his place will be Steve Sarkisian who is yet to call a single play at the NFL level in his coaching career. Maybe it makes all the difference in the world, or maybe it doesn’t. Regardless, it’s definitely something to gauge over the course of the season.
Which defense is going to take the field in 2017-18? Will it be the one that went through a ton of growing pains early on, or the one that closed it out strong en route to the Super Bowl. Atlanta’s stop unit conceded an average of 28.3 points per game heading into its Week 11 bye, but only an average of 20.5 points per game the remainder of the regular season.
As a whole, the NFC South greatly underperformed last season. The Carolina Panthers were a shell of their former selves after losing just one regular season game the prior season. New Orleans ended up splitting its eight home games leading to another 7-9 record, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers failed to take a step forward in Jameis Winston’s second season. Each of these teams improved in the offseason. Everything lined up perfectly for the Falcons historic season. Should everything break right once again, they’ll still be forced to fight history with 25 years passing by since the loser of a Super Bowl returned to the big game the following season.
