Although the Atlanta Falcons made it to the Super Bowl last season, oddsmakers have three other NFC teams favored ahead of them to make it to Minneapolis in 2018. Super Bowl losers tend to do poorly the following year and no team has returned to challenge for the Vince Lombardi Trophy since the Buffalo Bills lost four straight. Atlanta brings back virtually all of its talent from last year’s roster, but loses offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Can the Falcons be the team that breaks the streak?

Key Factors For Winning the Super Bowl
Keeping the Rhythm Going – No offense was better than Atlanta’s last season. Shanahan was able to come up with effective game plans against nearly every defense the Falcons faced and that led to this offense putting up phenomenal numbers. The way that Shanahan used Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman out of the backfield made Matt Ryan one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL and now the question is whether or not new offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian can keep it up. Sarkisian hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2004 and might have a pretty big learning curve.
Julio Jones – There aren’t many receivers in the NFL that are better than Julio Jones. Jones has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons and is the most talented weapon Ryan has to work with. He is entering the prime of his career and feasts on the bad secondaries in the NFC South. Jones has the size to overpower smaller corners and the speed to blow by everyone else. He was a monster in the postseason against Green Bay, lighting up the Packers and made one of the best catches in Super Bowl history against the Patriots. Even though that turned out to be for not, Jones’ hands were able to put the greatest dynasty in NFL history on the ropes.
Good play out of Devonta Freeman – Many analysts considered Freeman’s solid season in 2015 a fluke, but he showed that wasn’t the case last year. Freeman continued to show that despite his small stature, he can get the hard yards between the tackles. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry last season and continued to be a receiving threat out of the backfield in 2016. The Falcons just rewarded him with a five-year contract extension and believe that he was not just a product of Shanahan’s system.
A revamped defensive line paying dividends – The weak link for the Falcons last season was along the defensive line. Atlanta’s defensive line ranked 25th in the NFL according to Football Outsiders and the team made some moves this offseason to shore up the unit. In the draft, the Falcons used their first-round pick on Takkarist McKinley and he has the potential to make an instant impact opposite Vic Beasley. Offensive lines will focus on the more proven Beasley and that should give McKinley a better chance to succeed. Atlanta rolled the dice with massive DT Dontari Poe too. Poe has battled injuries the last few seasons but has been a great run stopper when healthy. If he can stay on the field, he will shore up a run defense that struggled in 2016.
