While the Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t expected to win it all last season, they were expected to build upon a 5-11 season the prior year. That unfortunately didn’t occur. When the dust cleared on 2016-17, the Jags brought up the rear of the AFC South standings with a 3-13 record. The team actually closed as one of the favorites to win the division before the season started. That’s not the case this season with it expected to once again finish last in the division. So if there ever was a time to buy low on what Shahid Khan is trying to get done with this fledgling franchise, now is the time to do it.

Key Factors For Winning the Super Bowl
The Team Must Buy Into New Coaches – It didn’t take long for Gus Bradley to get served his walking papers at the tail end of last year. In fact, he didn’t make it through the full season instead getting axed in mid-December. With that came an influx of new coaches headlined by the signing of Doug Marrone to be the sixth coach in the franchise’s existence. He inherits a team that made some nice strides defensively a year ago, as well as one that has the pieces in place to be one of the better offensive attacks in the league. With him and Tom Coughlin looking to put their stamps on the franchise, it will be up to the players to react positively towards the new philosophies on offense, defense, and special teams. The old regime couldn’t get much to go right over the last four years evidenced by their 14-48 overall record. It can’t get any worse, can it?
Leonard Fournette Must have an Impactful Rookie Season – It’s been quite some time since the Jaguars last had a successful running back toting the rock. You have to go back to 2012 to find the last time they had a capable back. Maurice Jones-Drew filled that slot admirably winning the rushing title, but ever since, it’s been a revolving door of futility in the Jaguars’ backfield. Fournette almost won the Heisman Trophy a few seasons ago. Injuries curtailed his final season in Baton Rouge, but don’t for one minute overlook his abilities. He has the size, speed, and athleticism to be one of the best the league has ever seen. Much of that relies upon Blake Bortles completely turning his career around, and the offensive line finding a way to open some holes. Jacksonville ranked in the bottom third of the league in rushing yards ( 101.9 YPG ) and a tick below average in yards per carry ( 4.2 ). If the Jags force opposing defenses to account for their ground game, the offensive onslaught that many believed would occur last season might just end up being a year late.
The Defense Must Build Upon Last Year – The Texans, Cardinals, Vikings, Broncos and Seahawks all finished top five in total yards allowed last season. Can you guess who checked in at No. 6? That’s right, the Jacksonville Jaguars. They only allowed opposing offenses to combine for 321.7 total yards per game with only 215.2 yards per game coming through the air ( No. 5 ). Still, there were some glaring issues with the unit. Its seven interceptions were a league-low, and they only registered 33 sacks ( No. 19 ). Its inability to generate a pass rush or prohibit opposing offenses from routinely coming up with huge strikes downfield cost it dearly. Todd Walsh got some new toys to play with in the draft and free agency, but he’ll mostly be looking to newly converted middle linebacker Myles Jack to set the tone of the defense with Paul Posluszny slowly but surely seeing his role reduced. Many things have to go right for the heavily dogged Jaguars to flirt with the Lombardi Trophy, but the most important of them all just might be the defense taking another step forward.
